Espanyol secured a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club at the RCDE Stadium, with late goals from Pere Milla and Kike García marking a crucial victory in the battle for La Liga survival.
Espanyol entered the match in 16th place in the League with 39 points from 35 games. The Athletic Club took ninth position with 44 points. Both teams needed positive results as the season reached its final stretch. Espanyol’s recent form read poorly with just one win in five games.
In the first half, Espanyol dominated possession and controlled 63 percent of possession. However, clear chances remained limited for both sides. Athletic Club pressed high and created dangerous moments despite having less possession.
Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović made four saves throughout the game, which were decisive in keeping the visitors at bay. The home defense held firm under pressure. Neither team found the breakthrough before the break.
At half-time, the score remained scoreless. Espanyol needed to turn their territorial advantage into real goals. The Athletic Club sought to exploit spaces on the counterattack in the second period.
The tie was broken in the 69th minute when Pere Milla fired Espanyol ahead. Milla’s arrival as a substitute changed the complexion of the match. His composed finish gave the home crowd something to celebrate.
Milla’s goal changed the momentum decisively towards Espanyol. The midfielder’s entry injected fresh energy into the hosts’ attack. Athletic Club struggled to respond to the breakthrough.
Kike García secured the victory in stoppage time at minute 90+2. García’s goal came after Athletic Club’s defense weakened in the closing stages. The second strike ended the visitors’ hopes of a comeback.
Espanyol finished with 12 shots in total, five of which found the net. Athletic Club managed 11 shots with four on target. Expected goals favored Athletic Club with 0.82 against Espanyol’s 0.76, but the hosts’ clinical finish was decisive.
Urko González impressed at Espanyol with a rating of 7.9, making three tackles. Leandro Cabrera also featured prominently in the home defense. Both players have contributed to dampening Athletic Club’s attacking threat.
The victory brings Espanyol closer to securing the League for another season. Athletic Club’s ninth position remains secure despite the defeat. Espanyol will look to gain momentum with this good performance.
