This is the reason why Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan rejected his citizenship request from India

In the 2023 IPL season, Rashid got an offer that could change his international future. While representing Gujarat Titanshe was informed about a meeting with a senior official Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“I’ve had offers from both Australia and India (citizenship and play). – said Rashid as it is said in the book.

According to Rashid, the conversation revolved around the possibility of him moving to India and getting citizenship. They told him that with full support, he could live, play and build a career there. The proposal comes at a time when Afghanistan is facing political and social instability, making it all the more significant.

But Rashid’s answer was clear and irrevocable. He politely declined, stating that his identity as an Afghan cricketer was non-negotiable. For him, wearing the Afghanistan uniform carries an emotional charge that no foreign opportunity can replace. He stressed that if he cannot represent Afghanistan, he would prefer not to play international cricket.

“I went and greeted him. We started a conversation and he said: “The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian papers, live here, play cricket here”. I was surprised by what he said and did not know how to respond. But I smiled and said, “Thank you very much. I play for my country, Afghanistan.” added Rashid.

His decision reflects deep patriotism and sense of responsibility. At a time when many players might consider such offers for career advancement or stability, Rashid chose to stick to his roots, sending a strong message of national pride and loyalty.
