Floyd Schofield files petition for Gervonta Davis fight

Floyd Schofield is trying to force Gervonta Davis to a decision that the WBA has so far avoided.

The No. 1 contender at lightweight filed a petition with the sanctioning body, asking for a mandatory fight with Davis or the chance to fight for the title if the champion moves in another direction. The move comes as Davis is linked to a comeback, with talk of a rematch against Isaac Cruz at 140 pounds gaining traction.

“We’re currently in a petition with the WBA to get the ‘Tank’ Davis fight mandated because we’ve been the number one contender for 11 months now and haven’t been given a chance,” Schofield’s father and trainer said in a clip posted by FightHype.

“It’s like they’re skipping over us. Right now we have that petition to find out what the WBA and ‘Tank’ are going to do.”

The pressure sounds direct, but the WBA already has room to delay a clear decision. By designating Gervonta Davis as champion-in-recess earlier this year, the sanctioning body created a path that allows the division to move without forcing it into an immediate defense.

That leaves Floyd Schofield pushing against a system that rarely thwarts his biggest draw.

“They say ‘Tank’ wants to go up to 140 pounds to fight Pitbull, but that stopped us,” Schofield Sr. said. added.

A more likely outcome is for the WBA to order Schofield into a separate title fight, possibly against another contender such as Lucas Bahdi, while keeping Davis in position for a bigger return later on. If Davis goes ahead with a fight against Isaac Cruz at 140, a special permit would allow him to move without giving up his position at lightweight.

Unless the WBA breaks from that pattern, the petition may not force Davis into the ring. It might just decide who fights for him next.
