Adrian Bales won the Heaton Memorial 10km

The North East event features the British Masters Champs and kicks off our UK wide road race round.

HEATON MEMORIAL 10km including British Masters Championships, Jesmond, Tyne & Wear, 9 November

In a race full of championship credentials, it was non-veteran Adrian Bales who led all masters to win the Northeast AA title in 31:35.

Chasing home the Birtley Harrier was the first over 40 as Tyne Bridge’s Jarlath McKenna was a close 2nd overall to become both BMAF and Eastern Masters Champion in 31:40.

Bales was in the lead at 5km after clocking 15:38, two seconds clear of McKenna, when the group of eight crossed in 16:02.

M50 winner Brian Wilder was another to establish himself over the half distance with a 16:44 5km split.

It was a different story for the M55 title as Chris Nicol led 5km in 17:08 before David Parkin stormed in to take a comfortable age group win, but M60 winner Stuart Robinson was never troubled until 36:47.

There were also the two oldest age groups as M85 David Murekit and over 90 Ian Barnes did more than just make up the numbers.

There was less competition among the women, but W35 Alex Sneddon was first home in 36:43, exactly one minute clear of top W45 Justina Heslop, who has it all in her age group in these sections.

Sneddon covered 5km in 18:08, well clear of first-time captain Holly Lawrence’s 18:34, while Heslop, after a first 5km of 18:41, came second overall.

W55 winner Wendy Chapman and W60 first homer Jackie Murdy clocked identical times of 40:38 to top their age groups.
