Oscar Valdez will hold a lightweight competition against Ricky Medina on September 6 on September 6 in the Domo Binacional in his hometown of Negaors, Mexico.
Top rank’s broadcast future
The top rank did not reveal which network, if any, the Valdez-Medina struggle will be pointed out. Their seven -year contract with ESPN expired on July 26 last month. They still need to be looking for a new broadcast agreement.
Former two divisions world champion Valdez (32-3, 24 CO’s) has not fought since last December when he was stopped by WBO Super Featherweight Champion Emanuel Navarrete in the sixth round.
Promoter Bob Arum says Valdez will look for his third world title. He does not mention which of the champions he will target at 130. It would be useless for him to fight Navarrete again after being dominated twice. The other champions, Lamong Roach Jr., Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez, and ‘Shaqui Foster, would also be cruel battles for him.
An important test for Valdez
“Oscar Valdez is a proud fighter, and it is a wonderful opportunity for him to return home and prove that he still has what is needed to camp at 130 pounds,” said top rank Chairman. “Oscar has been with the top ranks since he became pro, and we are in his corner as he tries to become a three-time world champion.”
Medina (26-7, 10 COs) has lost two of his last three fights, and is probably no match for even this version of Valdez. With his youth, however, he can give Oscar a real test. We do not know what Valdez left in the tank at this point in his 13 -year career. He lost three out of his last five fights and struck twice by Navarre and once by Shakur Stevenson. It was all unilateral.
Can Valdez regain past glory?
Valdez should consider moving back to 126 and trying to regain the success he had in that weight class. This is where he started his career and fought at the highest levels. He is not strong or skilled enough to fit with any of the champions at 130.
