What is the difference between a pegasi and a unicorn?
I often find myself pondering this question about mythical creatures deep at night. Not because I want to, but because I have a two-year-old daughter who will inevitably grow up and ask me all kinds of questions about magical horses. And if I don’t have a good answer? She’ll think I’m stupid.
I won’t let it happen.
So what’s the difference? Wings vs. Horns. A pegasus has wings, while a unicorn has, as its name suggests, a single horn on its head.
Now that you’ve satisfied my rambling, let’s get to the (horse) meat of this story: NIKE just dropped the Pegasus 1 golf shoe, and it’s unlike anything they’ve done before.
For four decades, the NIKE Pegasus line of running shoes has been synonymous with speed. It’s often the first and perhaps only running shoe that the average person might lay eyes on for a reason.
It’s the pinnacle of NIKE’s driving innovation. And just as I’ve pondered the difference between pegasuses and unicorns, I’ve also wondered why NIKE never brought the same technology to a truly standout golf shoe.
Well, they finally did the damn thing.
NIKE decided to lean heavily on the Pegasus name, heritage and technology for a new golf shoe. Introducing the Pegasus 1 golf shoe: the pinnacle of NIKE golf shoes.
Unicorns live among us
So what makes it a unicorn? It is the same reason why Victor Wembanyama is often called a unicorn. You don’t find that combination of height, skill and mobility very often. It is rare. It is unique.
So is the unicorn, at least in the less mythical sense.
For too long, NIKE’s line of golf shoes has felt like an afterthought. At least, that was my opinion.
But what they’ve created with the Pegasus 1 golf shoe is a unique combination of performance and packaging that makes it stand out as the flagship of the NIKE Golf shoe line.
There are two things that will make the Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe a massive success: rare comfort and unique appeal.
Rare comfort
NIKE achieves rare comfort in the Pegasus 1 golf shoe with a combination of two foams. Cushlon and ReactX work together to create a comfortable and responsive feel that almost any golfer will appreciate.
Combine that with the uniquely sculpted heel, similar to what they did with the Pegasus 41 and 42 running shoes, and you have something that many golf shoes struggle to achieve: true running shoe fit and comfort.
Unique attraction
This is where things get interesting.
NIKE has taken lessons from its studless and studded golf shoes and combined them in the outsole of the Pegasus 1 golf shoe. The forefoot features NIKE’s spikes, which unfortunately are not replaceable. The heel section uses an attractive studless pattern similar to what we’ve seen on recent Swoosh offerings.
Like the damping setup, the two traction systems work together to provide grip in almost any condition. I’ve never been the biggest fan of NIKE’s top designs, but this setup should be better than previous efforts. The fact that they managed to stick five studs in the front is a huge win.

NIKE’s Pegasus line is 42 years old.
I dare you to find someone that age who wouldn’t describe themselves as wise, experienced or insightful.
That’s what the Pegasus 1 golf shoe is all about. NIKE has spent more than four decades learning what makes a great running shoe. Then they took all that knowledge, expertise and veteran knowledge and packaged it into a golf shoe worthy of the best greens on the planet.
Do I think the NIKE Pegasus 1 Golf Shoe will be a success? I sure do. But that’s just me.
