Living in Tulsa Time
Chances are, I’m going to make some of the people who live in Tulsa feel slighted today. Not on purpose, of course, I just don’t know much about Tulsa. As such, I initially had no idea why Toulon would choose to name their latest Small Batch player after this town in northeast Oklahoma.
There is a golf presence in Tulsa. Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa has hosted several golf tournaments. The course has been the site of three US Opens, a handful of US Amateur tournaments and five PGA Championships. The most recent major played there was the 2022 PGA Championship. Belated congratulations to Justin Thomas if you’re reading this.
This club has an amazing tournament history, but is that enough to name the player after the city of Tulsa?
Maybe Sean Toulon is a huge fan of Sylvester Stallone and is pumped for season 2 of the King Tulsa.
As it turns out, Toulon’s reason for naming this small-group player Tulsa wasn’t really motivated by golf or Stallone. Instead, the motivator was fat.
Take me to church
Last month, when we talk about Toulon and Sons Small Batch Scotland I mentioned how Toulon Small Batch putters releases are accompanied by nuggets of knowledge. For example, the story of the Toulon Scotland shooter taught me that people walk their dogs on the old course at St Andrews on Sundays.
This time, Toulon’s extra education focused on Church Studio in Tulsa.
The Church Studio is one of those magical places where the right combination of artists, acoustics and producers come together to make something special.
In the early 1970s, Leon Russell and JJ Cale converted an old church into a music studio and produced a combination of blues, country and rock that later became known as the Tulsa Sound.
Big name artists like Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, The Gap Band and George Harrison all recorded music at The Church Studio.
Although perhaps not as historically significant as Sun Records Studio in Memphis, The Church Studio has a similar “musically significant happened here” vibe.

The planet of sound
The story of Toulon Small Batch Tulsa is a sound story. In the early stages of development, Sean and the boys noticed the unique tones the Tulsa produced on the kicks.
Some of you may not realize this, but sound production plays an important role in dashboard design. A design that works as a clipper but produces unpleasant sounds on impact will be reworked to remove or adjust the pitch of the tones produced. “Looks great but sounds terrible” is not a sustainable marketing strategy.
Very quickly, reaching what I would call Sound of Toulon became the design mission for Toulon Tulsa.
Love is Anser
The Toulon Small Batch Tulsa design began as a Toulon Austin. Austin as Anser was then modified to generate the required sound. The thickness of the face was changed to generate a deeper impact sound.
The face mill, bumper shape, and even neck shape were all targets for tone tuning in the search for the ideal sound.
Speaking of the neck, the H5 flow neck provides more fingerboard hang than the traditional plumber’s neck. I appreciate the aesthetics of the seamless connection of the back of the neck to the back of the topline.
It’s such a clean transition and gives Tulsa a stunning look at address.
Final thoughts on the Tulsa and Toulon Small Batch
Overall, the Toulon Small Batch Tulsa is a very underrated design, especially for a limited edition player. Like the Tulsa sound, this minimalist aesthetic is also intentional and aims to represent an Art Deco design style.

Regardless, the more I learn about the city of Tulsa, the more curious I become. Great music, the arts and championship-caliber golf courses? Count me in.

Sometimes, less is more. By limiting engraving and stamping to Tulsa, Toulon allows the curves and character of the metal to take center stage. Sure thing. The population is just over 400,000, making it the 47th most populous city in the nation, and it is located along historic Route 66. Oil production was big business in Tulsa, and at one time it was called The oil capital of the world. That’s where all the money for Art Deco buildings in the 1920s came from, by the way.
