5th DL Cup for Kipyegon 3:54.75 MR, Chebet 14:09.82 MR, Fabbri 22.98 MR/NR

BRUSSELS (BEL, September 14). The second and final day of the Allianz Memorial van Damme concluded a long and very successful 2024 Wanda Diamond League season. In cold but wet weather again (first day 37,000, second day 34,000), the athletes set three meeting records. 1500m queen Faith Kipyegon won her fifth DL trophy, Beatrice Chebet helped Medina Eissa break the U20 world record and Leonardo Fabbri improved his national record. Appreciative crowds watched five new DL champions crown and defeat Olympic champions Kruser, Yav and Tebogo.

Brief reviews

Women

200 m. Premier DL title for Brown 22.20 (0.2) over Neita (22.45).

200 m (non-DL). McLaughlin-Levron 22.40 (0.1) clearly remaining in the field.

1500 m. Fifth DL title (and fourth in a row) for Kipyegon in MR with a time of 3:54.75 ahead of Welteji (3:55.25) for a top 9 finish in 4:00 and NR for home country Wanderelst (4:01.26) in 11th place. .

5000 m. Chebet produced another stunning performance to win in 14:09.82 MR, missing his own WL by just 0.3 seconds. Eisa, taking the second place, broke the world under-20 record with a score of 14:21.89; However, he was already faster last year (14:16.54), but without a doping test after the race, Tesfaye finished third (14:28.53 PB); in the field with two more PBs in the race. Chebet for the 2nd DL win overall.

3000 m run. Olympic champion Javi couldn’t keep up with Cherotic, who went on to win big and take the DL title in 9:02.36 (9:02.87 to 9:02.87).

100 m hurdles. A clear win for Camacho-Quinn in 12.38 (0.4), who finally added the DL title to his tally ahead of Visser (12.54).

400 m hurdles. Fourth straight DL Cup for Ball in 52.45 minutes, Cockrell second by a wide margin (53.71).

Pole vault. Kennedy cleared a 488 on his first attempt and attempted a 495 (which would have been an AR), while Morris finished second ahead of Newman and Cowdery, all clearing 480s. Second DL win for Kennedy.

Long jump. Premier DL title for Iappichino: 680 (0.0) over Nichols: 668 (0.0).

Spearman. Vilagosh led Kitaguchi in the final series with a 65.23, but the Olympic champion responded with his final throw and a season-best 66.13 to move into third on the season list and win the DL title.

Men

100 m (non-DL). Omanyala 10.07 (0.0) clear.

200 m. Bednarek an impressive 19.67 (0.7) in cold weather and a successful Olympic replay against Tebogo (19.80). 2nd overall DL win for him.

400 m hurdles. dos Santos by 47.93 over Samba (48.20). Second DL win overall for the Brazilian.

800 m. Vagnoni, from fourth on the home straight, won his DL title in 1:42.70 ahead of Sejati (1:42.86) and Arop (1:43.25). His second DL final win.

High jump. Third DL title for Tamberry, who cleared 234 on 3rd attempt (and retired), avoiding a tie with second Doroshchuk (231 =PB).

Triple jump. Pichardo won his third DL title with a 17.33 (0.4) to Hess’ 17.20 (0.3).

Shooting. Fabbri stunned his rivals with a massive first throw and MR of 22.98, bettering his own Italian record by 3cm and winning his first DL title, although he did not add another 22m attempt after that. Olympic champion Kruser attacked him, showing five throws of 22m, but 22.79 was insufficient.

Javelin throwing. Peters led from the start with 87.87 and held on to win by 1cm from Chopra (87.86). His first DL win.
