Why MotoGP teams refused to partner with Dorna at the start of the season in Thailand.

MotoGP plans to kick off the 2025 season with a special event in Thailand next month. But there are already concerns that the issue could become serious.

Every rider and team will be in Bangkok for the event on February 9. Thailand will play host to the first Grand Prix. MotoGP season at the end of the month in Buriram International District.

There will be free admission for local residents, and the event will be streamed live online. It is aimed at creating publicity and excitement for the upcoming campaign.

All the drivers will go to the stage set up in the center of Bangkok to meet the fans. And while the teams aren’t likely to reveal the exact details of their 2025 bikes, they’ll be showing off their new bikes live.

MotoGP commercial rights holders Dorna Sports have followed the same path as their F1 counterparts, Liberty. The four-wheeler series is holding its season opener in London at the end of February.

Freedom is trying to find the sport. As such, this is a likely occurrence in the premier class.

Speaking on the Crash.net podcast, journalist Lewis Duncan relayed the feelings between the teams about the start of the season. There was some confusion in the paddock at the end of last season.

Dorna had hoped to give a first look at the new bikes, but the teams refused to cooperate. Instead, they typically contain their own independent launchers.

The process in Bangkok generates money that can be shared between the groups. But it is more profitable if they offer their own sponsors instead.

Duncan says he’s saying LCR will unveil their bike a day early. Even after hiring MotoGP’s first full-time Thai rider in Somkyat Chantra, they were implicitly less interested.

“I think MotoGP has already messed this up. Obviously, this was something that was organized very hastily. We only heard about this at the end of last year.

“I remember in Barcelona, the press officers going around and saying goodbye to everyone at the end of the season.[They said]’We’re having a team launch, I don’t know what anyone else is doing, but here we are.’

“Obviously, MotoGP had the idea in its head that this is what it wants to be and all the teams said, ‘No, because we make a lot of money, this is a great event for the sponsors. Now, it’s basically the presentation of all the bikes you’ve ever seen.

“The fact that the LCR was done a day earlier – they couldn’t make the LCR work on the ninth, even Chantra’s bike in front of the home fans. They couldn’t put that together. Sorry, the event is basically a bit pointless at this point.”
