David Benavidez says he expects former Cuban amateur star David Morrell growling at his feet after beating him on February 1, admitting that the ‘Mexican Monster’ is “the best” after beating him at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The “Respect” prophecy
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) says ALL his opponents follow the same formula where they talk him up endlessly, saying he’s a “bum,” has “no defense” and is a limited fighter going in. But after he beats them, they sing another tune and shower him with compliments.
What Benavidez doesn’t point out is that the guys he fought throughout his long career were smaller guys like Demetrius Andrade, Caleb Plant, David Lemieux, Anthony Dirrell and Ronald Ellis. It was the best Benavidez fought before making the jump to 175 last June.
“I have nothing. I’m a bum. I’m a RoboCop. It’s good that he thinks that way,” David Benavidez told Boxing News about David Morrell considering him a second rate fighter. “You better have no excuses after I beat you up in front of your own people.
“What are you going to say? You’re going to say David Benavidez is the best. Just like you and everyone else I’ve fought before. They say the same thing. After they get in the ring with me, it’s a whole different story. You’re going to see too,” Benavidez said.
That sounds sick. As you can see, interim WBC light heavyweight champion Benavidez has created a completely unrealistic cartoon in his head. The fight will likely play out in reverse, with Morrell winning and Benavidez saying afterwards, ‘How could I be so wrong?‘
Morrell’s power
It will be interesting to see if Benavidez, 28, can get away with fighting the same style he did at 168 when he gets in the ring with Morrell, who is a monstrous puncher with both hands.
Benavidez might not last long against Morrell fighting like he has in his last three fights, especially against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15th. Morrell hits too hard and will punch holes through Benavidez if he tries to overwhelm him with volume like he did against the 37-year-old Gvozdyk.
