Mumbai and Indian National Cricket Team all-rounder Shardul Thakur had a disappointing record to his name on Friday (November 29). The right-arm pacer now holds the record for the joint-costliest spell in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Shardul claimed the coveted record during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 match between Mumbai and Kerala on Friday (November 29). The match between the two teams took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Shardul Thakur looked hot with the ball in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 game against Kerala.
Unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction, Shardul looked hot with the ball against Kerala. The all-rounder was taken to the cleaners by the batters and he did not look his best while bowling poor lines and lengths.
Mumbai, who dominated the field first, did not perform well with the ball and Shardul was the main reason behind that. The new-ball all-rounder was taken on the run from the start and he failed to turn things around with the ball and was put under pressure.
Shardul Thakur recorded figures of 1/69, which was the joint worst in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Shardul Thakur recorded figures of 1/69, which was the joint worst in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He now shares the record with Arunachal Pradesh’s Ramesh Rahul, who scored 69 runs against Haryana in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 a few days back.
Shardul Thakur picked the wicket of Sanju Samson early but failed to restrict the flow of runs thereafter. Kerala’s Salman Nazir remained unbeaten on 99 while Rohan Kunnummal (87) played a crucial hand as they put 235 runs on the board.
Thakur has been struggling to keep up since the last few years and has also been left out of the Indian team set-up.
Shardul Thakur’s economy was above 17 which speaks volumes about his struggles. The fast bowler has been struggling to keep up since the last few years and has been dropped from the Indian squad and has been at par with the ball in the Indian Premier League.
Playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024, he played nine games and picked up five wickets at an average of 61.80. His poor batting with the ball saw him go unsold in the IPL auction as no team bid for him, making it a huge setback for the pacer.
Shardul Thakur was also dropped from the Indian Test team. He was not selected in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as the team ahead of him went with the young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has contributed admirably to the team with bat and ball.
