Liverpool and Mohamed Salah “distanced” in new contract talks

Negotiations over a new contract with Liverpool for Mohamed Salah are still ongoing, but the club and the player remain “away” from a deal, according to a report.

Salah is one of the three high-profile Liverpool players who will become free agents this summer. Along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Egyptian forward’s contract status has dominated the dialogue around Liverpool, although the players appear impatient.

Arne Slot’s side sits on top Premier League table and Salah is adamant the club can “win it all”. Whether he will remain on Merseyside after the end of June 2025 is less sure.

While Salah’s management team is still actively discussing the various demands and expectations of his clients regarding his new deal, Sky Sports Germany report that no agreement has been reached or is even close.

Salah became the highest paid player in Liverpool history when he signed a three-year contract extension in the summer of 2022. Despite entering the autumn of his career, the 32-year-old remains undoubtedly the best right winger in the world and has already hit double figures for goals and assists in all competitions.

Slot has been decidedly open about the uncertain future of its star players. “In general, contractual situations are talked about by the people who have to talk about them,” explained the Dutch coach at the beginning of this month.

“I’m one of them, but I shouldn’t talk about it in public. I talk about it with (sporting director) Richard (Hughes). It’s the place where we have to talk about it and not in front of a microphone.”

Virgil van Dijk, another is out of contractpraised Salah as “a special, special player” after the striker had a hand in both goals last weekend. 2-0 win at Aston Villa. “I see the hard work he puts in every day, and his consistency with his numbers and performances. He’s a special athlete and a legend at the club. I’m very happy we still share the ground.”
