The winner of the Memorial Tournament will win $4 million, as you can see at the bottom of this story. And the event will pay $20 million in total. And Jack Nicklaus says money is part of what makes a tournament attractive to players.
But in anticipation of Memorial for 50 years, Nicklaus said there is more.
“I mean, first of all, the course, the date,” Nicklaus said earlier this week. “I think the purse to some extent, not a big degree. If you have a really good golf course and you have it in really great condition, the players, with their comments about what it is, kind of help to take it. I think most of the players that have come here have really liked the golf course and they’ve really liked the condition.
“But also, you know, one thing I tried to do is I knew how I wanted to be treated as a player and where I went and what I did. And, you know, there are some tournaments that did really well. Some did it correctly. I think we do it pretty well here. And I think the whole idea of making sure that the players are taken care of by a practice structure — to be able to do the first practice and the ability to do from scratch. — E you know, I think autographs are great for kids and so forth, but there’s a certain time and place for them, and for me it’s not on the golf course and that area is good.
“So that was one of the things that we did. Augusta does the same thing with that. I think we saw all those things that people — that I liked to have done as a player. You have your courtesy cars. You have — try to — I’m forgetting 90 percent of it, but, you know, I’ve always liked things right — so we tried to make a player the way I thought here. handled, that’s what we wanted to do we used to do here So that’s part of helping build what you’re doing.
“I think the support you get from the golf community and the press, obviously. You know, you guys have given us great press. You’ve given us great respect for what we do and what we try to do. That’s very important to what we do.”
With that, here are the payouts for the Memorial, played at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
