The Adrian Martinez Classic will be held on June 7, 2026 in Concord, MA. It is one of my favorite foods. I’ve been writing about it for over a decade and I love going to meetings.
This is a piece about the 2014 Adrian Martinez Classic, one of my favorite years of the event.

Here’s our story on the 2014 Adrian Martinez Classic. It was a fun matchup and it will be tomorrow, June 1st at the Adrian Martinez Classic.
2014 was held in the bucolic surroundings of Concord, MA. The Adrian Martinez Classic. The rain and clouds cleared for a few hours as a combination of age and elite events entertained crowds of young runners, their parents and friends of the sport. The world leader in the women’s mile was driven by Viola Lagat, sister of Bernard Lagat. Viola Lagat took the mile from Morgan Useni as Lagat ran 4:29.43.
In the featured Adro Mile, the quartet broke away to give the crowd four men under four minutes. Eric Finan, Hammish Cornish and Julian Oakley beat Leo Manzano as the four battled it out in the final, with Eric Finan winning the race in 3:58.73, Cornish in 3:58.74 and Julian Oakley third in 3:58.89. Leo Manzano clocked a 3:52 mile for fourth in 3:59.31 at the Nike Pre Classic on Saturday.
Amy Hastings ran her best race of the year in the women’s 5000m, finishing in 15:25.94. Amy Hastings ran with an abandon we haven’t seen her in since 2012.
The Adrian Martinez Classic is a wonderful event held in honor of Adrian Martinez, who died of a sudden cardiac arrest while playing football. The Adrian Martinez Classic serves as a fundraiser for the Adrian Martinez Scholarship Fund at Concord-Carlisle High School and the Friends of CCHS Track & Field.
Adrian Martinez’s mother, father and sister were present at the meeting. Angel Martinez, CEO of Deckers Corporation, is the father of the late Adrian Martinez. Angel Martinez, a gentle, creative and thoughtful soul, and her family were welcomed by family friends. Jim Van Dyne, President of HOKA ONE ONE, was there with Peter L. with Thompson to ensure the meeting goes well. In addition to his love of all things sporting, Peter’s British accent lends a sense of respectability to the announcement, with amusing anecdotes and thoughtful commentary on the sport. Jim Van Dyne is the guiding spirit behind HOKA ONE ONE, appointed by Angel Martinez to transform the cult brand into a true running brand. Van Dyne, all smiles, looks at every detail. There was the HOKA ONE ONE sign and shoe stall, like a meeting from another era.
Support from the running industry was also evident. Reebok president Matt O’Toole, Saucony’s Freddie Doyle, Mark Bossardet, Brian Mahoney, former Reebok shoe guru Ed Lussier and Tommy Ratcliffe, manager of KIMBIA, were all there. to support the event, the cause and Adrian’s family. A picture of Van Dyne, Martinez, Bossardet and Lussier, all Reebok alums, was being circulated late in the evening.
Angel stood by the track for a bit with Marc Bossardet and I enjoying the action. He was particularly taken by the Adro Mile, where Leo Manzano was fourth in a four-man race for the sub-4 minute magic mile. “I would like to see more events like this across the country. That’s why we sponsor 2 Mile Postal, this meeting and our other events. We want to add some excitement to the sport.”
Years ago, in a conversation with one of my philosophy professors, a man who constantly carried a nitroglycerin tablet, I was told that when the professor died, he wanted a children’s playground built over his grave. He wants frivolity, fun and activity to be the way his life is remembered. The Adrian Martinez Memorial honors the late Adrian with a celebration of movement, life and work.

And this is how Adrian Martinez is remembered. In an event that celebrates movement and active living, the Martinez Classic was a huge success. That Garrett O’Toole, in high school, went from ninth to sixth in the half-mile at the finish, running 4:01.89, the fastest time ever for a high school boy in New England, seems like a fitting way to remember a young man who loved his family, loved sports and loved life.
And so it should be.
