Daniel Dubois Won’t Wait For Fabio Wardley Rematch

Daniel Dubois has stopped short of guaranteeing an immediate rematch with Fabio Wardley, saying his focus is on staying active and defending his WBO heavyweight title rather than waiting for any opponent.

Wardley activated the rematch clause following his 11th-round stoppage loss to Dubois in April, a fight that saw the Londoner rally from an early takedown to maintain control and gradually wear down the champion with sustained pressure.

Although a second fight has been widely discussed, Dubois suggested nothing has been finalized.

“Yeah, well, that’s what they’re talking about, but I’m not going to wait for anyone,” Dubois said when asked about Wardley during an interview with talkSPORT. “I’m going to get busy with that belt, defend that belt.”

The 28-year-old added that he wants to build on his success after reaching the top of the heavyweight division.

“I can’t wait to start improving, get out there and maximize what we’ve been doing since I was a kid taken to the gym with my dad. And now here we are, like this,” Dubois said.

Dubois captured the WBO title with a dramatic knockout victory over Wardley, who entered the fight after back-to-back victories over Justis Huni and Joseph Parker. Wardley enjoyed early success and scored a takedown, but Dubois gradually took control as the fight progressed.

Heavy shots from Dubois left Wardley badly scarred around the eyes and bleeding his nose before the referee stopped the bout in the 11th round. Debate ensued over whether the fight should have been stopped earlier.

Frank Warren has repeatedly indicated that the rematch remains the likely next step, and Wardley has already confirmed he intends to exercise his contractual right to a second fight.

Dubois’ latest comments don’t rule out that outcome. However, they make it clear that he is not prepared to put his career on hold while negotiations take place. The heavyweight champion wants activity, and his focus remains on defending the belt rather than waiting for a roster to be completed.
