A potential bout between Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson could be one of the first major fights Zuffa Boxing stages if recent reports prove accurate.
According to boxing reporter Sean Zittel, sources have indicated that both Haney and Stevenson have agreed to join Zuffa Boxing, with an official announcement possibly coming in the near future. Zittel also claimed that the promotion’s preferred matchup would be a showdown between the two former world champions.
“I’ve also been told that Zuffa, the fight they want with the signing of both of them is for them to fight each other,” Zittel said on his channel.
Zittel added that he has been informed Team Haney is interested in doing the fight, while the reported bottleneck is Stevenson.
“What I was told yesterday, and some of what I’ve been told, was the Haneys want the fight, Zuffa wants the fight, the quit is Shakur Stevenson,” Zittel said.
The timing of the report comes as Haney’s welterweight title picture has become more complicated. Keyshawn Davis was recently installed as the mandatory challenger for Haney’s WBO welterweight title, creating another high-profile option for the former two-division champion. Zittel claimed sources told him the mandatory designation could affect the timeline for a potential Haney-Stevenson clash.
Neither Haney nor Stevenson have publicly confirmed a deal with Zuffa Boxing. Stevenson has repeatedly pushed back against reports linking him to the promotion, while Zittel has admitted he has yet to receive a response from members of Stevenson’s team regarding the latest claims.
If the reported plans come together, Haney vs. Stevenson will immediately be among the biggest fights available in the heavyweight division, matching two undefeated former world champions tied for years.
