World Cup 2026 – Tournament preview

The final of the World Cup it has only been contested by teams from Europe and South America. European nations have won 12 titles, while South American nations have won 10.

Inevitably, teams from these continents dominate live betting and punters would do well to focus on these regions when looking for a potential winner.

Reigning champions Argentina will be desperate to defend their title after winning it for the third time at Qatar 2022. However, that will be easier said than done.

Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) are the only nations to have recorded consecutive World Cup successes.

England will be a popular choice among sports punters classified with two games to sparebut they have limited appeal as a betting proposition.

Their only previous success at a major tournament came at the 1966 World Cup and they will likely be flattered to deceive again next summer.

Brazil, Germany, France, Portugal and Belgium should put in big efforts in the tournament and could lift the trophy if they find their best form.

However, it will be difficult for all of them to stop Spain, who are betting to add the World Cup title to the European crown they won last summer.

They are unbeaten in the qualifiers and look a good bet to go into next summer’s tournament with an unblemished record. Spain were in a class of their own at Euro 2024 and are eager to cement their legacy when they are crowned world champions in New Jersey on July 19.
