Australia captain Pat Cummins He hinted that his participation in IPL 2027 remains uncertain as he prepares for one of the tightest contests in international cricket in his career. With Australia planning to play up to 21 Test matches over the next 12 months alongside the defense of their ODI World Cup title in 2027, the fast bowler admitted that compromises may be necessary to manage the workload.
Cummins, who captains Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has revealed that Test cricket and the ODI World Cup remain his top priorities, raising the prospect of him opting out of the cash-rich league in 2027.
Pat Cummins reveals IPL 2027 availability
Australia’s demanding schedule includes away Test series against South Africa, India and England, and the journey eventually leads to the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Given the physical demands of fast bowling and leadership responsibilities, Cummins admitted something had to give.
“Something has to give at some stage next year and it won’t be Test matches or the ODI World Cup. I’ll take a closer call and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a few injuries so I don’t want to rule anything out.” Cummins told The Age.
The statement makes it clear that while Cummins has not ruled out IPL 2027, international commitments will ultimately determine its availability.
Test cricket and the World Cup remain top priorities
Cummins further emphasized that Australia’s primary tasks will take precedence over franchise cricket. The paceman believes he may require a break after a tough tour of India before embarking on another Ashes battle.
“For me, the priorities are always Test matches and the ODI World Cup. I dare say that if I play all-India, I need some kind of break before the very grueling Ashes series,” Cummins added.
Australia are expected to play 13 away Tests in South Africa, India and England during this period, making workload management a major concern for the team’s top-order fast bowlers.

Rotation policy on cards?
Cummins also discussed the possibility of Australia attacking at a more aggressive pace in the coming years. beside him, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood All have been dealing with injury issues recently, prompting selectors and team management to think long-term.
The Australian skipper suggested that the team may have to rely on a wider pool of fast bowlers to successfully manage a packed schedule.
“Yes, it’s possible. I think we’re pretty open minded as we’ve seen over the last few years. Whether it’s a Test at home or away, we don’t see them that much differently. A Test match is a Test match,” the Aussie captain explained.
The Australian skipper even hinted that some bowlers may be rested if he feels the team’s recovery period in the latter stages of overseas tours would be more beneficial ahead of important series. Such a strategy would help Australia keep their first-class fast bowlers fresh for the marquee tournament, while also reducing the risk of injury.
“I see a world where we potentially drop some bowlers, say at the back of the India series, if they’re not going to play, to give them extra rest before the Ashes.” Cummins added further.
Notably, the 33-year-old is recovering from a significant back strain that forced him to miss four Ashes Tests in the 2025-26 Australian summer and also ruled him out of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The injury delayed his arrival for IPL 2026, where he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad midway through the season. During his absence, Ishan Kishi led the franchise to the playoffs with explosive batting and impressive performances from the young bowling unit.
