At the top 100 GOLF teachers summit in Cabot Citrus Farmsone of our favorite questions to ask field instructors is this: What is one shot that every player should learn how to hit that will make them a better player?
The answers vary by teacher, but a number of them chose learning a reliable and repeatable shot around the green. AND GOLF Teacher to watch Heather Angell is no exception.
The best-selling hybrid of the year is launched high to keep the greens

“Hybrid cooking is one of my favorites,” she said. “Depending on what kind of course you’re playing—if it’s one that has a lot of bunching around the green, the hybrid is a great club to use because the grass is often a little fluffy to hit, especially if you’re a few feet from the green.”
Hybrids have crucial loft degrees that a putter does not have, which allows you to move the ball to the top of the grass, even with a relatively small swing movement.
Tight lies are also great for hybrid use, Angell says, because you can make a smooth spin with a hybrid instead of hitting the ball with an iron.
How can you become more proficient with your hybrid around the greens? Hold the club all the way through the grip for maximum control, Angell says. Then take a shot at the placement style. It really is that easy.
“I teach it in clinics all the time,” Angell says. “It’s just a great shot to learn and use around the green because you get the ball in the air enough to keep the grass rough, but you never lose that control.”
When you’re trying to break 100 or 90, minimizing green errors is one of the fastest ways to lower scores. One way to do this is to become friendlier with your hybrid shots on the green. Try Angell’s tips and watch your results start to drop in 2026.
