After Europeans dominated the Americans in the fourth session of the 45th Cup quadrilateral, it is easy to wonder what went wrong for Team USA.
While it is certainly not a deal as big as it used to be with Eliminate “a ball” The rule two decades ago, a possible explanation may be the choice of golf ball and couples.
While teams in four Usually change the balls each holeUsing the player ball who will hit the approach, there are still teams playing a ball throughout a match. In this week’s fully equipped Golf episode, Johnny Wunder explained why this could be easier for Europeans.
“For the team of Europe, I don’t think it matters. Now, the United States can become interesting for the fact that some of these people play (specific golf balls).”
What Wunder was referring to is that many American players or play a CPO golf (with custom performance) or an older model with specific features. In comparison, most European players play the latest model golf balls.
For example, Xander Schauffle plays Callaway’s Chrome Tour Dot Golf Ball, which is a custom version of the Callaway Chrome Tour Ball.
“Not everyone in this team can theoretically want to play Xander because specifically how it flies from 5-Herkuri to the wedge,” Wunder said. “He plays the point. So it’s kind of the most delightful ball.”
Cameron Young also plays the title young Pro V1x Prototype with two -pointwhich may be more similar to the CHROME tournament point, but they are still different golf balls.
Including young people, seven players use a title golf ball, but none of them play the same model. In fact, no player in Team USA plays the same golf ball model.
Patrick Cantlay – ’19 Pro v1x
Bryson dechambeau – ’25 Pro v1x
Harris English – ’17 Pro v1
Russell Henley – ’21 Pro v1x
Scottie Scheffler – ’21 pro v1
Justin Thomas – ’23 Pro v1x
Cameron Young – ’25 Pro v1x dotto dot
Sam Burns also uses a personalized version of his golf ball, Callaway Chrome Tour+, which is a spinny version of the retail ball.
While this may not seem like a major issue, the nuance differences between the golf balls may have effects when it comes to accessing shots, given the different startup and rotation characteristics.
Here are the other golf balls used by Team USA.
Sam Burns – Chrome Tour X+
Ben Griffin – ’25 Maxfli Tour x
Xander Schuffele – Callaway Chrome Tour x
Collin Morikawa – ’24 Taylormade TP5
JJ SPAUN-’25 SRIXON Z-STAR DIAMOND
By comparison, Team Europe has many more players playing the same or similar golf balls.
For example, Ludwig Aberg and Justin Rose both play the title of 2025 Pro V1X, Sepp Straka and Shane Lowry both play 2025 Srixon Z-Star XV and Jon Rahm and Rasmus Hoygaard play 2024 Callaway Chrome Tour X.
Tommy Fleetwood and Rory Mcilroy play the latest versions of Taylormade TP5X and TP5, respectively, but Mcilroy played TP5X last season and this is the ball they used for four.
