West Ham secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Everton at the London Stadium, with Callum Wilson’s stoppage-time goal sealing three crucial points in their battle against relegation.
West Ham went into the game in 17th place with just 33 points from 33 games, and desperately needed a win to keep their survival hopes alive. Everton, meanwhile, were 11th on 47 points and came in as favorites on the day. The visitors dominated possession early on, controlling the tempo with their superior passing accuracy and territorial advantage.
The first half was relatively quiet in terms of clear chances. Everton created the best chances thanks to their control in midfield, but West Ham’s defense held firm. Both teams struggled to break down, with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested. The hosts tried to hit on the counter-attack whenever possible, relying on pace and directness to trouble Everton’s backline.
Yellow cards came throughout the first 45 minutes. Jarrad O’Brien received the first booking in the 38th minute for Everton. James Tarkowski followed moments later with a booking of his own. The intensity grew as the half wore on, but neither team found a breakthrough before the break.
The second half started with immediate impact. Tomáš Souček opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, firing West Ham ahead with a clinical finish. The Czech midfielder’s goal fired up the home crowd and swung the momentum decisively in favor of the hosts. Everton needed an answer.
Jarrod Bowen was instrumental for West Ham, providing two assists from his position on the right wing. His crossing and movement created space for teammates to attack. El Hadji Malick Diouf, meanwhile, controlled the midfield with five tackles, repeatedly breaking up Everton’s play. Everton pressed hard but could not find an equalizer despite their numerical advantage in possession.
Everton equalized in the 88th minute when Kalvin Dewsbury-Hall finished from close range. The goal sparked hope for the visitors with just a few minutes remaining. However, West Ham responded immediately. In the 90th + 3rd minute, Wilson struck the decisive blow, tucking in the winner to send the home crowd into overdrive.
The statistics reflect a tight competition. West Ham had 10 shots with three on target, while Everton registered 11 shots with three on target. Expected goals favored Everton 1.35 to 1.17, but West Ham’s clinical finishing proved decisive. Everton’s 56% to 44% possession advantage did not translate into points.
This win lifts West Ham to 36 points with four games remaining. The three points provide a vital respite in your descent. Everton remain on 47 points and need to regroup for their next game.
