Tyson Fury could be plans for a long-awaited fight with Anthony Joshua delayed by first pushing for another stay-at-home game, according to his manager Spencer Brown.
Earlier this month, Fury returned after 16 months out of the ring, beating Arslanbek Makhmudov on points in London. After the victory, he called Joshua to join him in the ring and talked again about the heavyweight showdown that had dragged on for years.
A two-fight framework has been discussed for Joshua, with a return in July expected ahead of a proposed November clash against Fury. Brown now says Fury’s team will also prefer one more fight before going into that match.
“We signed, we’re just waiting. We’re ready to go,” Brown told Goldstar Promotions. “The thing is, Tyson has been out of the ring for a long time. So we’ll probably want another fight before the AJ fight. A proper warm-up and then we’re ready to go.”
Brown also pointed to Fury’s new relationship with Netflix, saying he expects Fury’s future bouts to continue on the platform after his comeback win is brought there.
“We’re just waiting for Anthony and Eddie Hearn to sign,” Brown said. “But it would be nice to have one more fight.”
The problem is clear. Extra tune-ups add new risk to a fight that has already missed several windows. If Fury picks another safe opponent for a July matchup, it’s likely to be someone with a decent position but limited mobility, think a Mahmoud Charr or a rematch with someone like Derek Chisora.
Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh has seen similar plans collapse before when one side lost a perceived easy battle. A proposed Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder showdown fell apart after defeats, while plans surrounding a rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia also fell apart in the same way.
Fury-Joshua is still the biggest all-British fight available. Adding more steps before that happens again feels like tempting fate.
