The Boston High School Cross Country Championships take center stage at Franklin Park


This is a post about the BAA Middle School Cross Country Championships that took place earlier today. Middle School cross country is a big sport in the USA. The Boston High School Cross Country Championships take center stage at Franklin Park

Nearly 300 students competed in individual and relay races at Franklin Park to crown Boston’s fastest high schoolers.

Franklin Park, Boston, Massachusetts (Oct. 23) – A perfect fall morning that is Boston Athletic Association (BAA) hosted 2025 Boston High School Cross Country Championships today in Franklin Park. Nearly 300 student-athletes from ten Boston schools competed to be crowned the city’s fastest runners. Running nearly a mile around Playstead Field, all participants earned a unicorn finisher medal.

Since 1997, BAA, Boston Public Schools and Boston Parks and Recreation have hosted the Boston High School Cross Country Championships to celebrate healthy lifestyles and promote physical fitness among Boston’s youth. Nearly 14,000 student-athletes have participated in the event since its inception.

WCVB TVBAA Race’s official broadcast partner was on hand to cover the day’s races.

Eliot K-8 Innovation School scored a perfect score of 15 in the Girls’ Race, led by; Mairin Gough successfully defending his individual title. Goff easily covered the .95-mile course in 5:54.4.

“This is my third time running this event and my second time winning it,” Goff said. “It feels really good.”

Elliott School went from 1 to 6 places. Goff was joined in Elliott School’s top ten by Kali Moore (2th6:11.2), Callie McHugh (3:th6:16.1), Morgan Childs (4:th6:22.6), Alexis Uber (5:th6:28.9), Madison Bonosoro (6:th6:30.8) and Madeline Silveira (8:th6:39.9). O’Bryant School placed second Girls team (53 points) followed by Curley K8 (110 points). O’Bryant’s Akila Oruma (7:th6:36.3), Charlotte Bath (9:th6:44.5) and Alison Conway (10th6:46.8) completed the top ten.

The boys’ race came down to a three-way sprint. Matias Builes Chavarriaga (O’Bryant’s School) beat Patrick Goff (Elliott’s School) and Jack Heaton (Warren Prescott), all crossing the finish line within two seconds of each other. Builles Chavarriaga’s winning time was 5:24.8, while Goff ran 5:26.0 and Heaton ran 5:26.8. Rounding out the top five were George Ritchie (Elliott, fourth, 5:39.2) and Jeremiah Heaton (O’Bryant, fifth, 5:39.4).

“I was fifth last year, so to win it this year is amazing,” Builles Chavarriaga said. “It’s really amazing. I feel so good.”

The boys’ team title was lopsided, with Eliot K-8 Innovation School edging O’Bryant School by two points, 35-37. In addition to Goff, Eliot Richey, Theo Brown, Tyler Kaschel, Rorey Herrick, Caleb Frederick and Treyson Scarpa were on Scarpa’s roster. Third place went to Warren Prescott (81 points).

The Co-Ed Relay closed out the day’s action with two heats racing against the clock. Warren Prescott won by just half a second, winning in 43.2 seconds to O’Bryant’s 43.7 seconds and Kilmer Upper School’s 45.2 seconds. All ten competing teams finished the four-man relay in under 51 seconds, with 7.51 seconds separating the first and tenth place teams.

All finishers were presented with BAA unicorn medals by two-time Olympian and BAA High Performance Team coach Mark Carroll, who was joined by BAA High Performance Team professional runners.

Thursday’s races not only served as the cross-city championship meet, but also as a qualifying event for April’s BAA Middle School 1K. The BAA Middle School 1K is held as part of the BAA Invitational Mile, where athletes from each of the eight towns and cities along the Boston Marathon route race down Boylston Street.
