The best and worst outfits at the US Open

Here at MyGolfSpy, we appreciate a well-dressed golfer.

Sometimes professional golf feels like a sea of bland colors — muted colors, safe choices and guys who put little effort into their looks — so it pays to call out those who look sharp.

And, of course, we have to call a spade a spade with some of the worst looks (if we see a more hideous NIKE polo, we might dig).

To break down the fashions from the first two rounds of the US Open, I enlisted the help of my fellow MGS fashion expert Isaiah McGahee.

Here are our best and worst dressed players so far at Shinnecock.

Best dressed so far

Keith Mitchell (Thursday)

ISAIAH: It’s not a best dressed list without Keith Mitchell. Cashmere Keith is more than the best-dressed player on Tour. The cardigan, light pink polo and stone-colored trousers are about as classic a private North East club look as you can get. Seriously, this look is great.

Sean: So effortlessly crunchy. Mitchell just oozes country club cool.

Tommy Fleetwood (Thursday)

ISAIAH: This is Tommy Fleetwood’s best look very far. As soon as I saw him in this outfit, I immediately texted the MyGolfSpy group chat “Fleetwood DRIPPED OUT for the first round”. Clearly I wasn’t the only one. The golf ball cardigan set the intern trend because everyone was on board with it. However, not everyone is on board with the price. $750 for a sweater is legitimately insane. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t look great, and Thar Fleetwood didn’t look absolutely incredible, because he sure does.

Sean: Find someone who loves you like Tommy likes coffee in coffee. I like his Masters outfit a little better, but the golf ball cardigan goes really hard.

Billy Horschel (Friday)

ISAIAH: Billy Horschel always looks like a million bucks (no duh, he’s sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren). His script for the second round featured white trousers with a polo shirt with white stripes. To top it off, he wore a two-tone vest – white on the front and blue on the back. To fully appreciate this ensemble, it is enough to see it in person. This was my favorite look of the entire US Open so far.

Sean: I really like the scale of the colors here. White shoes, white and navy waistcoat, white hat, navy polo – all add up to something modern yet professional.

Adam Scott (Thursday)

ISAIAH: Once again, Adam Scott almost has to be included. Usually, Adam kept things sophisticated. The royal blue sweatshirt with white trousers is a clear contrast. Not much to say here other than good job Adam (and Uniqlo).

Sean: It’s frustrating that so many pro players seem like they’re dressed in the dark… when it’s really not that hard. You can look good without doing anything unusual.

Harris English (Friday)

ISAIAH: Harris English is one of the most consistently dressed players on Tour. Like Adam Scott, English usually keeps things pretty simple with his Onward Reserve outfit. In the second round, he wore a pink polo shirt with navy blue trousers. Again, this is a very simple yet impressive color combination. Harris English proves again and again that good style doesn’t need to be complicated.

Sean: *Bernie Sanders voice* I’m once again asking pro players to wear more pink.

James Nicholas (Thursday)

ISAIAH: After the departure of Justin Thomas, Greyson found their newest face in James Nicholas. His first-round script fully embraced the American element of the US Open. Nicholas looked sharp in a red sweater, navy pants, and Shadow Wolf Polo, which I legally can’t tell if it’s gray, light pink, or light blue. Either way, the ensemble looks very American and very cohesive. Jones’ red, white and blue hat really pulls this off along with a neat bow.

Sean: The hat is a big look for me here. The letters match the sweater perfectly. This is also a reminder of how prominent logos can be done tastefully. I’m very impressed and vote this as my favorite look of the tour so far.

Worst dressed so far

Viktor Hovland (Friday)

ISAIAH: All I can say is wow. Hovland’s second round outfit is the absolute worst outfit I’ve ever seen on a golf course. sometimes. He looked like Jack Skellington. I guess I give Hovland some credit because Shinnecock is close to the sea and it seemed like it would fit as a pirate. J. Lindberg should be absolutely ashamed for bringing him into this and Hovland should be equally ashamed for saying yes. This is the equivalent of handing a child the keys to a car, saying “Here, kid, drive. I trust you” and getting into the passenger seat.

Sean: I gasped when I saw these pants. It really does look like Hovland is wearing pajamas. Or maybe he’s in an old prison. Black shoes and a white sweater just complete the funny.

Brooks Koepka (Thursday)

ISAIAH: I don’t usually hate what Koepka wears. However, the pink and white striped NIKE vertical polo looked terrible. Koepka looked like a 70s drug dealer from Florida in this shirt.

Sean: Someone tweeted that this shirt looks like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry wears his suit inside outand now I can’t see that. There are better bowling shirts than this atrocity. And the white belt is comically bad.

Jason’s Day (Thursday)

ISAIAH: Jason Day is a lightning rod when it comes to his outfit. Some are great and some are terrible. This is the latter. Black and gray with black and white GTH pants – really? Similar to Fleetwood’s excellent opening appearance, when I saw Day’s outfit, I immediately messaged the MyGolfSpy Group chat to berate him. Day’s ill-fated move to Shinnecock may be a blessing in disguise, because if this was a precursor to his wardrobe for the rest of the tournament, it’s probably best the world didn’t see it.

Sean: I usually support any outfit J. Day wears, but I can’t support these pants. Really disgusting.

JJ Spaun (Thursday)

Isaiah: Deciding to wear all white on a golf course is certainly a choice. Deciding to wear all white on a sandy golf course on an extremely windy day is even more of a choice. Look, I like JJ Spaun, but I don’t think solid color blocking is the best choice. This outfit was terrible.

Sean: Shoutout to Rickie Fowler as he also rocked the all-white ensemble (but had neon shoes with it). Spaun looks like a little boy. This is an outfit for the little boy.

Keegan Bradley (Friday)

ISAIAH: Keegan is usually a mid-pack dresser. I usually don’t care for his script though. In the second round, he wore a blue, white and red striped polo with gray trousers. It’s not the worst look ever, but it just doesn’t look good. Paired with the Jordans, it just looked confused.

Sean: I’m not particularly offended by this, but I’d like to stop Keegan from wearing the red, white and blue after his complete Ryder Cup captaincy failure.

Patrick Reed (Friday)

ISAIAH: Not sure what Reed’s obsession with wearing all black is. Maybe he likes to look like a villain; I can’t say it seriously. Either way, Reed looked hot, uninspired, and boring.

Sean: I think Reed should be excluded from these lists in the future. Clearly, he just doesn’t care about his fashion. This is the outfit of a golfer who couldn’t care less about his looks.
