India endured a frustrating outing in Ireland where the visitors failed to capitalize on key moments and lost both matches of the series. The second T20I was particularly heartbreaking as India trailed by just one run despite staying in the contest till the last delivery.
The defeat highlighted India’s batting inconsistencies, particularly in the middle order, where several established players struggled to make meaningful contributions. While the opening pair continued to make encouraging starts, the inability of the middle order players to convert opportunities proved costly.
The Indian think tank, which awaits England in the top-flight five-match T20I series, now faces crucial selection decisions. The series offers an opportunity to bounce back after Ireland’s disappointment, but also requires a fearless approach against one of the strongest white-ball teams in the world. It is in this context that Gavaskar backed a bold move by recommending teenage sensation Suryavanshi for the opening match.
Sunil Gavaskar explains why Vaibhav Suryavanshi deserves a chance
Speaking on Sports Tak, Gavaskar strongly defended Suryavanshi’s inclusion, saying the youngster could give India the spark it lacked against Ireland. According to the former Indian captain, the left-hander should go straight into the playing XI instead of out-of-form batsmen.
“I think he should be in the first match. It’s as simple as that. Keep the out-of-form batsmen out of the XI and play Vaibhav Suryavanshi instead. Absolutely. Either open with him or bat at No. 3. But one thing is for sure, he should make his debut against England on July 1.” Gavaskar said.
The batting legend also believes that Suryavanshi’s fearless approach can catch England off guard.
“If India want to surprise England in the first match, they should play Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Yes, he can go cheap in his first game. It can happen. But if he comes in the opening match, England will rock.” he added.
Gavaskar’s comments underscore his belief that India must embrace youth and attacking intent rather than continue with players struggling for form.

Gavaskar portrays the ideal role for a teenage prodigy
While Gavaskar insisted on Suryavanshi’s place in the playing XI, he also revealed India’s successful opening partnership. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma should not be broken unnecessarily.
“The opening partnership of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma has served India very well over the last year and a half. They have consistently given the team strong starts. So it would not be right to drop them after just two matches,” Gavaskar explained.
Instead, he suggested placing Suryavanshi at No.3 to replace the underperforming middle-order batter.
“But if you want to put Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the XI, I think you should drop one of the non-scoring middle-order strikers and play him at No.3. I don’t see any problem with that. If you want him at No.3, Ishan Kishan can bat at No.4. Order as you like.” he said.
With the England series starting on July 1, all eyes will now be on India’s team selection. Regardless of whether the management prefers Gavaskar’s bold recommendation, the T20I opener could be an early indication of the direction India intend to take after a disappointing Irish campaign.
