Stephen Edwards says Devin Haney’s fearlessness is getting into fighters’ heads

Trainer Stephen Edwards believes Devin Haney’s willingness to fight dangerous opponents creates a different kind of pressure on fighters in the current era.

In a post on XEdwards argued that Haney’s reputation for tough fights keeps opponents guessing before they even get in the ring. Rather than avoiding risk, Edwards says Haney embraces it, and that attitude alone can make other fighters uncomfortable.

“Random thought: Devin Haney is taking guys’ hearts ❤️ in this era, with his willingness to fight ANYONE,” said Stephen Edwards on X. “That one quality makes fighters in this era crave him a little because most aren’t prepared for it. You get the ‘what does he see in me’ energy from them.”

Edwards’ point comes at something Haney has followed throughout his career. Even critics who question his performances or point to the Ryan Garcia loss still acknowledge that Haney has consistently put up tough fights. He fought twice in Australia against Jorge Linares, George Kambosos Jr., Vasiliy Lomachenko, Regis Prograis and Garcia during a period where many top fighters were accused by fans of protecting undefeated records.

Reaction to Edwards’ post was mixed. Supporters agreed that Haney’s mentality separates him from many fighters in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, especially in an era where negotiations often drag on for years. Critics pushed back, citing the lack of an immediate rematch with Garcia and questioning whether Haney would really fight “anyone” under all circumstances.

Edwards seems to be talking less about matchmaking politics and more about mentality. Fighters are used to opponents trying to protect themselves, maintain leverage or wait for perfect timing. Haney’s willingness to move into tough fights instead of walking away from them changes the dynamic psychologically. If a fighter is eager to take on you, some opponents begin to wonder why.

This may be the larger point Edwards made. Haney’s style has always attracted debate, but his appetite for risk has quietly become part of his identity.
