Despite being overlooked for the captaincy this time around, Brook remains a central figure in England’s leadership group. Key stressed that this decision should not be taken as a failure for the 27-year-old football player, who continues to serve as the team’s vice-captain. The ECB boss also confirmed that Brook fully supports the challenge and has no problem with Root taking the side to New Zealand. “He was absolutely fine. All he wanted to do was play cricket for England and do the best he could. There were two candidates who could do that at this stage and we went for Joe Root.” Key said.
