Despite being in charge India Recently, a historic title defense ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav India is reportedly facing increasing pressure for the T20I captaincy. While the Mumbai batsman remains one of the most explosive hit-makers in world cricket, concerns over his prolonged dip in form have led to serious talk within the selection committee about the direction of the team’s long-term leadership.
According to multiple reports, BTSO voters are leading Ajit Agarkarincreasingly worried about Suryakumar’s batting numbers after taking over the captaincy duties. Before becoming captain, Suryakumar was regarded as the best T20 batsman in the world with an average of 43.40 in the format while dominating attacks with remarkable consistency. However, its revenues have declined sharply in the past year.
His struggles became even more evident during IPL 2026, where the aggressive batting capped a forgettable campaign. Representing Mumbai Indians, he managed just 195 runs in 10 matches at a disappointing average of 19.50. While India are expected to stick with him for the upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England, reports suggest that the management has started exploring future leadership alternatives in the shortest format.
Ricky Ponting names India’s next T20I captain
Amid uncertainty over Suryakumar’s future, the former Australian captain Ricky Ponting openly supported Shreyas Iyer As the leading contender to become India’s next T20I captain.
Ponting, who is currently acting as head coach Kings of the Punjabbelieves that Iyer has improved a lot over the past few seasons as both a striker and a leader. Speaking to PTI, the legendary Australian revealed that Iyer will have to fight with determination when India decides to go for a new captain.
“I think there are several contenders, but in my opinion he is one of the main candidates.” Ponting said while discussing India’s leadership options.
The confirmation comes at an interesting time for Iyer, whose international T20 career seems to have stalled. The right-handed batsman has not played a T20I for India since December 2023 and even missed the entire home series against New Zealand earlier this year. However, through consistent reinvention in franchise cricket, Iyer has once again forced his name into the national conversation.
Long criticized for being a conservative middle-order anchor, Iyer has drastically changed his T20 approach in recent seasons. The strike rate, which was once around 135, rose to 178 last season and remains above 160 in IPL 2026 – a huge turnaround that strengthens its case for a comeback.
Why would Ponting’s choice be the ideal successor for Surya?
What sets Iyer apart from several other candidates is his proven record of leadership under pressure. The 31-year-old has quietly built one of the strongest captaincy resumes in IPL history.
Interestingly, Iyer is the only captain to have led three different franchises to the IPL final – highlighting his adaptability and tactical acumen. Unlike leaders who inherit settled squads with specific cultures, Iyer has consistently helped create a competitive environment from scratch and steered teams into title contention.
His calm demeanor, strong game awareness and ability to handle pressure in the dressing room are qualities that many believe India will need in the next phase of transition in T20 cricket. While Punjab Kings have had a tough second half of IPL 2026 after a bright start, Iyer’s wider leadership credentials continue to impress the pundits.
