Fans of the Golf Channel have known each other for a long time Rich Lerner — an Emmy Award-winning broadcaster whose name and face have been network constants for nearly three decades. Over the years, Lerner has collected a number of stories he wanted to tell, and now they have been compiled into his first book, titled, Aren’t you that golf guy?
On this week’s episode of Subpar, Lerner joined hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz to discuss his foray into book writing. Lerner says he didn’t hold back in writing the book, taking on some surprisingly personal themes.
“I don’t know if I’ll still have this gig when the book comes out,” Lerner said with a laugh. “But we’re letting it fly.”

The book is a blend of Lerner’s childhood experiences working at his father’s fairway and his professional life in the world of golf.
“The book reads like Instagram, it’s like moving,” said Lerner. “The chapters are fast. Some are a little deeper, longer than others. Maybe two-thirds are loose, funny, locker-room stuff, and then the other third is, you know, quite heavy and, and I think, poignant at points.
“I do deep dives on Tiger, on Phil,” he continued. “It’s Tiger’s rise, his fall and his comeback, the redemption story. I’m deep behind Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, who have been very good to me over the years, and then I write about all the modern players. There’s an attitude about Bryson, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, we go to the Masters a lot and we don’t win it all.”
“No one tells a story like Rich Lerner,” Knost said. “I was crying laughing at some of the stories. It’s fantastic.”
