Nottingham Forest demolished Burnley 4-1 at the City Ground, with a Morgan Gibbs-White hat-trick turning the game into a one-sided affair after a competitive first half.
Nottingham Forest went into the match sitting 16th in the Premier League with 33 points from 32 games. Burnley finished in 19th place with just 20 points, having won just four games during the season. Both teams were in desperate need of points, but only one put in a performance worthy of three.
Burnley struck first when Zian Flemming finished clinically in the 45th minute just before the break. The goal gave the visitors real hope of pulling off an upset. Forest controlled possession with 52 percent of the ball but were unable to convert their chances in the first 45 minutes.
In the first half, both teams created limited clear chances. Forest mustered three shots on target while Burnley managed the same. The away defense held firm despite Forest’s midfield dominance, keeping the game competitive until the break.
Everything changed after the break. Gibbs-White equalized in the 62nd minute, then scored twice more in quick succession. His second came in the 69th minute, and his third came just eight minutes later. The Forest midfielder had transformed the game with a clinical finish.
Gibbs-White completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute to put Forest 4-1 ahead. The midfielder finished the game with a perfect score of 10, taking five shots with three on target. His performance was decisive in turning a competitive match into a demolition.
Igor Jesus added a fifth goal in the 90th minute to complete Forest’s rout. Burnley’s defense crumbled as the game wore on, conceding four goals in the second half alone. Yellow cards for Florentino and Kyle Walker showed the growing frustration in Burnley’s ranks.
Forest finished with nine shots in total, three on target. Burnley managed just four shots all game, three of which found the target. Both teams completed 82 percent of their passes, but Forest’s accuracy led to superior attacking opportunities.
The expected goals (xG) told the story clearly. Forest generated 1.0xG while Burnley managed just 0.36, reflecting the gulf in quality. The Forest keeper made two saves compared to Burnley’s, although the game was never in doubt after the break.
This result leaves Forest with 36 points in 33 games, approaching safety. Burnley remain in deep trouble with 20 points from 32 games, their hopes of survival fading fast. The gap between the sides widened significantly during the day.
Nottingham Forest travel to face a mid-table side next weekend. Burnley must bounce back quickly or risk falling further into the relegation zone. Forest’s second-half performance showed their potential as they fired on all cylinders.
