Ducati injectors Francesco Bagnaia Gresini Racing had a great start to the weekend at the Catalan Grand Prix as he finished P17. Alex Marquez set the pace in FP1 in Barcelona Early on Friday. Marquez was 0.940s faster than Bagnaia in FP1 on the same GP26.
It took Bagnaia just two laps to make a snap judgment on Ducati’s changes to the GP26 during the lunch break before returning to the garage at the start of the scheduled pre-qualifying practice session. However, fast lap times did not come easily for the Italians.

Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi told TNT Sport 2 that Bagnaia felt an unusual “vibration” on his first bike during practice. After switching to his second bike, the two-time MotoGP champion found “nothing to grip” on the exit of the corner.
Marco Bezecchi He began to find his footing around the Cirque de Barcelona-Catalunya in the early stages of practice. The 2026 championship leader climbed to the top of the order with a 1:39.062 to lead Marquez, while Tech3’s Enea Bastianini also showed potential on the KTM.
VR46 teammate Franco Morbidelli looked competitive on his Ducati GP25 and factory KTM ace. Brad Binder He got some positive signs in between the timed practice sessions. But Trackhouse is a gem No. Ogura He was the first rider to break the streak of Bezcic and Marquez.
Ogura got within 0.053 hours of the benchmark lap time that Bezecchi had set at the start of the hour. However, his potential was short-lived and, after recording a sluggish follow-up lap, Ogura crashed out in turn 2.
George Martin was cutting a desperate man in the Aprilia garage as the track fell silent for the most part in the middle of the session. Martin was unable to find the same pace he showed in FP1 before the crash, with the Spaniard the slowest of the four Aprilia drivers.
Qualifying tokens began to arrive at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as KTM’s Binder lowered his benchmark pace to 1:38.970 with the quarter hour still in action. But as Binder fired the starting gun, Alex Reigns crashed the Yamaha in turn 5.
Tech3’s Bastianini joins Binder at the top of the order as well Pedro Acosta KTM made it one-two-three by 0.260s against its factory teammate. Lap times continued to drop on soft rear tires heading into the final 10 minutes, but drivers were unable to beat Acosta.
Martin finally started to show some promise again after coming in on the Aprilia RS-GP, also behind teammate Bezcicci. Gresini’s Marquez and VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio also began to show the potential of the Ducati GP26 to topple KTM’s brief dominance.
Going into the final five minutes and true flying laps, Bagnaia still found himself in P19 with a 1.311 deficit on Acosta’s gauge. And the fastest lap was still not to come, with the Italian only able to improve to P15 with a deficit of 0.716s with his first flying lap time.
As the session started to wind down there were problems on the cards for Honda’s Joan Mir, as well as Martin after he folded his front end on cold tires at Turn 2. Martin was audibly and visibly upset by the accident as the 2024 champion secured his place in Q1 on Saturday.
Bagnaia continued to improve his pace in the closing seconds to move up to 10th, but was unable to sneak into the Q2 places as LCR’s Yohan Zarco flew into P5. Fabio Quattararo dragged his Yamaha M1 to P10 to join Jack Miller in the Q2 positions, 0.269s off the pace.
