“Yes, Ben Stokes broke his curfew. Yes, he was wrong. But is that an offense to be sacked as England’s test captain? I don’t think so. Stokes has a lot of credit in the bank for everything he’s done for England as a captain and as an all-rounder. There’s no way the big decision-makers at the England and Wales Cricket Bank should have the same credit.” Vaughan wrote.
He also suggested that the governing body should take a firm but fair stance rather than allow uncertainty to linger. According to Vaughan, if the ECB believe a dismissal is necessary, they should be confident in the decision – but he believes Stokes’ dismissal over the incident would be unjustified given the overall impact on English cricket.
“We’re at a stage now where they either hang their necks and say, ‘Right, we’re sacking you for this offence’, or they support him and move on. The ECB is hoping that Stokes will make the decision on his behalf. But he has to be brave and strong enough to do what he thinks is right. If that’s sacking him, fine, but I don’t agree with that decision.” Vaughan added.
