Fighting in front of a partisan home crowd, Paro controlled much of the early action with his speed, footwork and southpaw jab. Crocker spent the opening rounds looking for the left hand that helped him win the vacant title against Paddy Donovan, but Paro repeatedly avoided the shot while landing clean counters of his own.
The Australian established an early lead by boxing behind his jab and straight left hand. Crocker found moments of success in the second and third rounds, bloodied Paro’s nose and landed several hard right hands, but Paro continued to dictate the pace and appeared to be building a lead on the scorecards.
Paro’s best stretch came in the middle rounds. A left hand to the body followed by a left uppercut rocked Crocker briefly in the fifth, though the champion answered later in the round with a powerful right hand that sent Paro tripping into the ropes.
That punch shifted the momentum, and Crocker began applying relentless pressure.
Crocker landed several heavy right hands in the sixth round and continued to apply pressure, supporting Paro and finding success with his power shots. While Paro remained the busier and more accurate boxer, Crocker’s power repeatedly kept him in contention.
The championship rounds produced the fight’s most dramatic moments. Crocker raced forward in the eleventh and twelfth rounds, backing Paro up against the ropes and landing heavy combinations. A right hand to the back of the head in the eleventh gave Paro valuable recovery time after he was hurt, while a hard right in the final round opened a nasty cut over the Australian’s left eye.
Paro finished the fight with significant facial damage, including swelling around one eye and blood pouring from cuts, but he survived Crocker’s late assault and heard the final bell.
The judges awarded superior early work and ring generalship over Crocker’s late surge.
The win opens the door to several notable fights in the welterweight division for Paro, who now joins the ranks of two-division world champions. Crocker was respectful in defeat afterward and indicated he would welcome a rematch after one of the closest title fights of the year.
