The fight shifted heavily in Rodriguez’s favor during the second round as he began to slip inside and land quick flurries during exchanges. Rodriguez continued to wear down Perella in the middle rounds before scoring a clear takedown in the fourth with a hard left hand.
Perella survived the round despite Rodriguez landing combinations against the ropes, but the fight remained one-sided after that as Rodriguez controlled the pace and distance.
Perella showed toughness as he tried to use movement and long range punches to slow down Rodriguez, but he spent much of the second half of the fight reacting to pressure rather than establishing his own sustained offense.
The judges scored the fight 100-89, 98-91 and 98-91 for Rodriguez, whose experience and patience proved too much for the previously undefeated welterweight prospect.
Rodriguez has been quietly rebuilding momentum over the past few years and now appears to be positioned for bigger opportunities in Zuffa’s developing welterweight division after one of the strongest performances of his recent career.
Katzourakis remains undefeated
Andreas Katzourakis (17-0, 11 KOs) defeated Misael Rodriguez (16-1, 8 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision. Katzourakis controlled much of the early action with steady pressure, body shots and inside combinations that repeatedly backed up Rodriguez. Rodriguez rallied in the later rounds with sharper counters and improved activity, but Katzourakis continued to land the more consistent power shots and control the pace of the fight. The judges scored the bout 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94 for Katzourakis, who remained undefeated with the win.
Suray Mahmutovic (9-1-1, 6 KOs) defeated Raphael Monny (9-1, 3 KOs) by split decision in an eight-round light heavyweight bout on Saturday night. Monny found early success using movement, technical boxing and cleaner combinations to control distance and rack up rounds. Mahmutovic gradually closed the gap with steady pressure, body punches and a higher work rate during exchanges in the second half of the fight. Two judges favored Mahmutovic’s aggression and volume with scores of 77-74 and 76-75, while the third card also read 76-75 in the close fight.
Ivan Ortiz (13-0-2, 9 KOs) defeated Justin Viloria (12-1, 8 KOs) by an eight-round unanimous decision Saturday night in a lightweight bout. Viloria found early success using his southpaw stance, movement and cleaner punching from distance, but Ortiz gradually took control with relentless pressure and steady bodywork. Ortiz forced exchanges throughout the second half of the fight and outworked Viloria on the inside to secure scores of 78-73, 76-75 and 76-75. The win was seen as an upset by many fans and observers, as Viloria entered the fight as one of the heavily favored prospects on the card.
Heavyweight Da’Mazion Vanhouter (12-0, 9 KOs) stopped Raphael Murphy (18-2, 14 KOs) in the first round. The 21-year-old heavyweight prospect quickly hurt the 40-year-old Murphy with body shots before trapping him along the ropes and unloading combinations. Referee Tony Weeks stepped in and stopped the fight at 1:06 of the opening round as Murphy struggled to defend himself under intense pressure. The explosive stoppage continued Vanhouter’s rapid rise as one of the young heavyweight prospects on the Zuffa roster.
Alexis Alvarado beat previously undefeated Emiliano Cardenas for his first professional loss with a six-round majority decision victory. Alvarado (10-1-1, 5 KOs) applied steady pressure throughout the bantamweight bout and gradually took control throughout the second half of the bout as Cardenas (10-1, 4 KOs) struggled to maintain momentum. The minor finished strongly in the sixth round, helping secure scorecards of 58-56, 57-57 and 58-56.
Rakhmatullo Boymatov stopped Caleb Hall. Boymatov (1-0, 1 KO) overwhelmed Hall (6-3-1, 4 KOs) early with pressure and power shots and hurt him with a left hook before pinning him against the ropes. Hall struggled to recover as the undefeated Uzbek prospect continued to land clean punches, forcing the referee to stop the fight at 2:42 of Round 1. The win was an impressive professional debut for Boymatov.
