For a long time, it looked like 2027 would be the year 15-time major champion Tiger Woods eventually captained the US Ryder Cup team. Instead, a former major winner is expected to play the role of American captain for the second time.
According to one report from Associated Press, Jim Furyk will be named 2027 Ryder Cup captain for next year’s event in Ireland.
AP sources say Furyk will captain US Ryder Cup again in 2027
When the 2027 Ryder Cup kicks off at Adare Manor next September, the European team will have a repeat captain in the form of Luke Donaldwho has led his team to back-to-back victories.
The American team there will also be a repeat captainalbeit one with a less than sparkling Ryder Cup resume.
‘We support his decision’: Tiger Woods declines US Ryder Cup captaincy, PGA says
Kevin Cunningham
AP reported Friday morning that “three people with knowledge of the selection process said the Ryder Cup committee chose Furyk after Tiger Woods withdrew from the competition following his arrest on March 27 on suspicion of DUI.”
The PGA of America did not immediately respond to a GOLF.com inquiry about the report.
The American team has suffered two consecutive defeats in the biennial event. In 2023, Americans suffered a one-sided defeat in Rome 16.5-11.5 with Zach Johnson as captain.
For last year’s Ryder Cup, Keegan Bradley named US Ryder Cup captain in a surprising and controversial move by the PGA of America, which runs the American team. The bold choice didn’t work.
The American team was embarrassed during the first two days at Bethpage Black while American fans were embarrassed attacking European players and their families. A lively comeback on Sunday let the final score of Europe, 15; USA, 13.
Jim Furyk’s experience as US Ryder Cup captain
Furyk has a strong resume. In a long PGA Tour career, he captured 17 Tour victories, including a victory at the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields.
He also played on nine different US Ryder Cup teams. More importantly, he has the kind of experience that counts the most: Furyk served as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain at the 2018 event in France.
Unfortunately, that first experience may not give American golf fans much hope. With Furyk as captain, the American team was defeated by Europe 17.5-10.5 at Le Golf National and Furyk’s captain’s picks went 2-10-0.
Furyk also served as one of Keegan Bradley’s vice captains last year in the Americans’ loss to Bethpage Black and in 2023 for the USA’s loss in Rome. However, he was also a vice-captain for the US’s last Ryder Cup win in 2021.
1 positive for Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk
Although Furyk’s first shot at Ryder Cup captaincy in 2018 didn’t end well, there is one area of recent experience that supports the argument for his captaincy.
In 2024, Furyk captained the USA again, but not in the Ryder Cup. Furyk instead captained the US Presidents Cup team – with a positive result.
of The American team easily defeated the international team 18.5-11.5. It also took place on foreign soil at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada. The 2027 US Ryder Cup team will similarly play an away game in Ireland.
Of course, no two team events are the same. While Europe has dominated the Ryder Cup in recent decades, Team USA has a 13-1-1 record in the Presidents Cup.
