WBA welterweight champion Jack Catterall believes Jaron Ennis is the best fighter he has ever shared the ring with, ranking the undefeated American ahead of both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez farm.
Catterall has experienced elite company throughout his career. He served as Mayweather’s sparring partner during preparations for the Manny Pacquiao fight in 2015 before later helping Canelo Alvarez prepare for his clash with James Kirkland.
Yet neither left the impression that Ennis did.
“I would go so far as to say that he is one of the best fighters I have sparred with or been in the ring with; the speed, the power, the timing, the footwork,” Catterall told Pro Boxing Fans.
“So, I’m excited for that fight. I’m going to try to make the trip over there and support him. I think it’s a good night’s work for him.”
When asked if he expects Ennis to stop Xander Zayas, Catterall gave a straightforward prediction.
“I believe (that he will stop Zayas).”
Ennis moved up to junior middleweight after establishing himself as one of the premier welterweights of the post-Terence Crawford era, unifying major titles at 147 pounds before pursuing further success in a second division.
He is scheduled to challenge Zayas for the unified 154-pound championship on June 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. A win would cement Ennis’ growing reputation as one of boxing’s elite talents and, according to Catterall, confirm why he stands above every other fighter the Briton has faced in the ring.
