Jack Catterall reacts to Rolly Romero retirement

Jack Catterall wants Rolando “Rolly” Romero next after winning the WBA secondary welterweight title in Giza last Saturday night, and he says he is ready to travel to the United States to make the fight happen.

Catterall defeated Shakhram Giyasov by a 12-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBA “ordinary” welterweight belt. The win also put him in position as the mandatory challenger for Romero’s WBA “Super” title.

“The @WBABoxing wants a fighting champion, not someone who avoids mandatory fights and swings out. I didn’t take any damage in that fight. I feel fresh and ready to go again as soon as possible,” Catterall said.

The WBA reportedly gave Rolly 180 days to defend against Catterall.

Romero has not fought since defeating Ryan Garcia by a 12-round unanimous decision at Times Square in New York on May 2, 2025 to win the vacant WBA welterweight title. Since then, he has been linked to possible fights against Manny Pacquiao, Conor Benn and Devin Haney, but none have been finalized.

In a recent social media post, Romero claimed he was retiring because the top names at welterweight were avoiding him. Catterall’s response comes less than a week after his victory over Giyasov in Egypt.
