The lines between sports India It gets blurry in the best possible way, leading to interesting debates about who really has the upper hand in the fitness arena. It all started when he became a cricket icon Virat Kohli made a frank admission about the elite conditioning of hockey players. Not one to let a compliment slip without a bit of friendly competition, India’s former hockey captain officially dropped the gauntlet and challenged his opponent. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team to a high-stakes fitness competition.

In an exclusive interview with RevSportz, the midfield maestro Manpreet Singh reacted enthusiastically to Kohli’s recent comments. Known as one of the most physically imposing and conditioned athletes in world hockey, Manpreet did not hesitate to invite the batting maestro and his RCB teammates out of the cricket nets and onto the turf for a joint training session. The final battleground? Head-to-head Yo-Yo test competition.
While Manpreet paid great respect to the unique skill set required in modern day cricket, he was confident that the national hockey team would maintain its dominance in pure athleticism.
“You see, their game is also difficult. The ball comes very quickly. If you ask us to fight, it will be difficult. The ball comes at a speed of 150 km/h and that is difficult. His game demands are different, and so are ours. It’s all about eye contact, stroke, position and moreManpreet explained
Despite recognizing the sharp reflexes required to face triple-digit bowling speeds, the hockey icon believes the sheer, relentless aerobic and anaerobic demands of hockey will give his side the upper hand in the battle of endurance.

Kohli’s assessment of the fitness of hockey players
The cross-sport challenge comes from Kohli’s rather humble tribute to India’s hockey stars at the third edition of the RCB Innovation Lab’s India Sports Summit. The legendary batter, who single-handedly revolutionized the fitness culture in Indian cricket, stunned listeners by claiming that cricketers lag far behind their hockey counterparts.
“I know people sometimes look at fitna as unusual, but to me it’s just what the job calls for. To be brutally honest, we are not even 15% of the fitness of an Indian hockey player. Hockey players will laugh if they watch our training, because their sport is more physically demanding.” Kohli noted candidly.
Kohli’s self-awareness highlights the key difference between the sports, with cricket relying on bursts of explosive energy interspersed with short recovery periods, while hockey requires nearly sixty minutes of non-stop, high-intensity sprinting, rolling substitutions and rapid changes of direction.
Interesting, legendary mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton once expressed this opinion. Upton has previously remarked that if any cricketer had the raw physical and mental stamina to survive a rigorous training camp with the national hockey team, it would be Kohli. Whether this tantalizing crossover challenge will materialize remains to be seen, but the mutual respect between these elite athletes has set a phenomenal benchmark for Indian sporting culture.
