How KKR can qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs by beating GT in Kolkata

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) they kept IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive with a 29-run win Gujarat Titans (GT) Friday night at Eden Gardens. The win not only delayed their elimination from the tournament but also injected fresh energy into their campaign at a crucial stage of the season. It was a memorable evening for the franchise as a veteran all-rounder Sunil Narine completed 200 IPL games while KKR celebrated their 100th IPL game at their famous home venue.

led Ajinkya RahaneThe Knight Riders produced one of their most accomplished performances of the season against a Gujarat side who already looked like strong contenders for a top-two finish. More importantly, the win took KKR to 11 points from 12 matches and kept them mathematically alive in the play-off race.

Playoff scenario for KKR

Despite the morale-boosting result, Kolkata’s path to the playoffs remains a tough one. The equation for Rahane’s men is simple – they need to win both their remaining games in the league stage. KKR will face Mumbai Indians on May 20 before taking on Delhi Capitals on May 24.

If they can win both the matches, KKR will finish with 15 points. However, even this cannot guarantee qualification as Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans have already crossed the 16-point mark. This means Kolkata are realistically in contention for either the third or fourth playoff position.

The pressure will also be on KKR’s batting and bowling units to improve their Net Run Rate (NRR), which still remains marginally negative at -0.040. In a tightly packed points table, NRR can be the deciding factor in the outcome.

Even if Kolkata reach 15 points, their qualification hopes will still depend heavily on other results going in their favour. Several rival teams are also fighting for the remaining playoff spots, making the final week of the league stage incredibly tight.

KKR would ideally like Sunrisers Hyderabad to lose both their remaining matches against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Punjab Kings, who are currently ahead of Kolkata, have to lose at least one of their remaining games against RCB or Lucknow Super Giants.

Rajasthan Royals also remain in contention and KKR will be hoping they lose at least two of their last three games. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have to drop at least one of their remaining matches to prevent them from moving up in the standings.

Net Run Rate could be the biggest hurdle for KKR

While the win over Gujarat helped Kolkata NRR marginally improve, they still trail several direct rivals. Teams like Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad currently have healthier NRR figures, which gives them an advantage if the teams finish level on points.

For KKR, just winning might not be enough anymore. They may need dominant wins in their last two matches to boost their NRR significantly and strengthen their chances in potential tie-breaker situations. The management of the team will especially hope for the explosive performances of such players Rinku Singhand Narine, whose impact could be crucial in improving the winning margins in the final over.
