Host nation advantage: How the USA, Canada and Mexico could benefit from the 2026 World Cup

Co-hosting a World Cup is one thing. Actually benefiting from it is something else. For the first time in the tournament’s history, three nations share home advantage in the 2026 edition, and with the draw offering relatively friendly group stage paths for all three, the pressure is now on the USA, Canada and Mexico to do so. With Harry Kane among the eye-catchers England top goalscorer odds England’s own campaign will generate plenty of interest heading into the summer, but it’s worth following them with equal attention to the host nation’s stories.

All three co-hosts were placed in Pot 1 for December’s draw, a structural advantage that put them alongside the strongest teams in the tournament and kept the two most dangerous teams out of their groups. With 48 nations competing for the first time, the group stage is more forgiving than ever. In this article, we assess how each host could use this to their advantage.

Mexico

Mexico opens the tournament on June 11 at its stadium in Mexico City against South Africa. It’s hard to overstate what this means for a team accustomed to playing in hostile environments on the road. They will have a full house behind them for their opening game, and the same support in other home games in Guadalajara and Monterrey.

South Korea are the team to watch in Group A. They were unbeaten in Asian qualifying, conceding just eight goals in 16 games, and Son Heung-min remains one of the tournament’s most dangerous strikers. That said, Javier Aguirre’s side won both the League of Nations and the Gold Cup in 2025, arriving in much better form than Mexico’s teams in recent tournaments.

canada

Switzerland is Canada’s toughest group stage test and won’t give much away. Bosnia and Herzegovina complete the group after beating Italy 4-1 on penalties in the play-off final, ending Italy’s hopes of ending a run of three consecutive World Cup absences.

What Canada has going for it is a fan base that has grown rapidly alongside the national team over the past few years. Playing in Toronto and Vancouver, in front of crowds that have never seen their country in a World Cup on home soil, creates a different kind of pressure for visiting teams. It’s not a guarantee of anything, but it’s nothing either.

USA

Of the three hosts, the United States have drawn the easiest group on paper. Paraguay, Australia and a European qualifier in the play-off Group D they represent a path the USA will follow again, especially after beating both Paraguay and Australia in recent friendlies.

They will also play in 11 host cities, from New York/New Jersey and Los Angeles to Dallas, Houston and Seattle. Playing in front of packed home crowds at these venues, game after game, is a sustained advantage that traveling sides simply don’t have. You can track all the Football Odds as the group stage takes shape, but the cumulative effect of playing at home over multiple matches tends to be underestimated until the difference has already been made.

With favorable draws and an expanded format that reduces the margin for error in the group stage, the three hosts come into 2026 with a real chance. Whether they take it is another matter.
