Iván Romero’s brace secured a vital 2-0 win for Levante over Sevilla, lifting the hosts clear of the relegation zone with a great display at the Ciudad de Valencia Stadium.
Levante secured three crucial points on April 23 with a performance that belied their position in the League. The hosts entered the match in 19th place with 32 points, while Sevilla were 17th with 34 points. Both teams desperately needed a win to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
Romero opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a clinical finish. The striker showed composure in front of goal to give Levante a well-deserved lead at the break. His first strike set the tone for a dominant first-half display from the home side.
Levante controlled possession in the first 45 minutes despite Sevilla’s territorial advantage. The visitors struggled to create clear-cut chances, with just one shot on target in the first half. Levante’s defensive form remained solid throughout.
The yellow cards flew early and often. Adams was booked for Sevilla in the 10th minute, while Rey was booked for Levante in the 23rd minute. The match had an edge as both teams fought for every ball.
In the second half, Sevilla pushed for an equalizer but were unable to break down Levante’s resolute defence. Despite dominating possession with 57% of the ball, Sevilla managed zero shots on goal. Their expected goals figure of just 0.27 reflected their toothless attacking display.
Levante remained dangerous on the counterattack. The hosts created more clear-cut chances despite having just 43% possession. Romero’s movement inside the box was constantly problematic for Sevilla’s defence.
As the game intensified, more cautions came. Raghouber, Agoume and Sow were booked between the 59th and 77th minutes. The physical battle never let up as both teams fiercely competed for possession.
Romero sealed the result in stoppage time with his second goal in the 90+3 minute. The forward’s composure in front of goal proved the difference. Levante’s victory was fully deserved for their final clinic.
The statistics underlined Levante’s efficiency. Romero took two shots on goal and converted both into goals. Levante created an expected goal value of 1.5 compared to Sevilla’s 0.27, showing the gap in quality chances created.
Levante’s victory moves them to 35 points in 33 games. The three points give them room to breathe in their battle against relegation. Sevilla remain on 34 points and face increasing pressure as the season draws to a close.
Romero’s performance earned him a grade of 8.6, the highest of the game. His two-goal haul proved his importance to Levante’s survival hopes. The striker’s clinical finishing was decisive in a closely contested La Liga battle.
