George Martin says it is ‘impossible to know’ whether Yamaha will be competitive next year, despite having reportedly signed up for the Japanese manufacturer.

The news Martin is joining Yamaha. It broke shortly after being bombed by Fabio Quattararo to Honda during the winter. In the year It wasn’t a surprise to see the 2024 world champion leave Aprian after a public attempt to make it through an injury-plagued 2025.

But to change Yamaha It’s a gamble considering the team’s current woes. Last year they topped the standings and dropped further despite bringing in a new V4 engine.

‘Only time will tell’ if Yamaha can bounce back, says Jorge Martin.

In an interview with MotosanMartin was asked if he would have a ‘better chance’ against Aprilia and Ducati following the 2027 regulation changes.

Aprilia made a dominant start to the 2026 season, winning all three Grands Prix as well as the US GP Sprint. Martin is turning his form team to a best 10th on the grid.

Although the move has not been officially announced, one expects the Spaniard to express his faith in Yamaha, but the answer was surprisingly non-committal. If anything, it only accentuates his blind faith.

“I don’t know, only time will tell,” Martin said. “It’s impossible to know at the moment, no one can, and the main thing is to be in the moment and enjoy the bike I have.”

While Yamaha’s vast resources could help them return to the 850cc era, Martin could start to regret it if he challenges Aprilia for the title. He is now only four points behind teammate Marco Bezeci.

Although now it is too late to return from any activity, because Aprilia has signed Francesco Bagna As his replacement.

George Martin said the 2027 rules will be more fun for fans and drivers

Discussing the 2027 rules in general, Martin predicted the quality of the competition would improve. The first three rounds of the current season have been mostly entertaining, but many of them have been the showpieces of the 2025 tournament.

The hope is that stripped-back aerodynamics will be easier for riders to follow, while the suspension on ride-height devices should place greater emphasis on individual skill.

“I think it will change a lot, especially because it will be a more instinctive bike,” Martin said. “Without the help of aerodynamics, without a lot of equipment, there will be a lot more bridges, a lot more battles, and it will be more fun especially for the spectators, but also for the riders.”

“The ability to pass and play with other riders is now impossible, and it will get better.”

As it is, Martin won’t be able to ride a bike until next year, 2027.Drivers who have extended contracts will be eligible for the season test. However, there is talk of a ‘blanket amnesty’ to be implemented in the Valencia test after the season.
