Filip Hrgovic beats Dave Allen in Doncaster

Filip Hrgovic (20-1, 15 KOs) made quick work of Dave Allen (25-9-2, 18 KOs) on Saturday night, stopping the hometown heavyweight in the third round after Allen’s trainer Jamie Moore threw in the towel during a sustained attack.

The fight was one-sided from the opening bell at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster. Hrgovic established immediate control behind a stiff jab and sharp right hands, repeatedly backing Allen on the ropes while mixing left hooks to the body. Allen tried to answer with overhand rights, but most of his shots missed cleanly as Hrgovic controlled the distance and pace.

Round two followed the same pattern. Hrgovic continued to pump out hard punches while landing right hands and short hooks on the inside. Allen spent much of the round along the ropes as Hrgovic gradually wore him down with body work and combinations on top. By the end of the round, Allen was already absorbing heavy punishment without offering much resistance offensively.

Hrgovic closed out the show in the third. A hard body punch early in the round immediately put Allen under pressure again before Hrgovic doubled over with hooks to the body and head. Allen was soon trapped along the ropes again as Hrgovic unloaded a series of clean power shots, including right hands and hooks that badly injured Allen.

Seeing Allen take sustained punishment with little chance to turn the fight around, Moore stepped in and threw in the towel to stop the match.

The win gives Hrgovic a much needed bounce back performance after his loss to Daniel Dubois last year. Allen entered the fray with a late-career resurgence run, but the gulf in size, speed and power quickly became apparent once the opening round began.

“What he did was he found a future for himself. I’ll be honest with you. Tonight we knew it was going to be tough, but what tonight did was his family will be safe forever,” promoter Eddie Hearn told DAZN Boxing.

“What Allen has done this past year is everything to make sure that whatever Dave Allen does in the future, he can live with a smile on his face. He can live a happy life. His family can be taken care of. His kids can go to a nice school. He can have his own suite and the electric gates. It’s part of the game. It’s a tough game. We all came here to watch.

“Dave Allen comes in here and lives a dream. He wasn’t good enough, but that’s okay. In life, you’re not always good enough.”
