Eight Questions with the NIKE Pre Classic Team – runblogrun


Editor’s Note: Thanks to the management team of NIKE Pre (Joint meeting with directors, Jodie Smith, John Capriotti, with Jeff Oliver how Director of Communications) for their responses to our written questions. We originally requested a Zoom interview, but NIKE Pre was in crazy time mode.

As someone who has been fortunate enough to meet the gathering and prepare for the last few days, I can tell you the following.

NIKE Pre Classic, in my mind a true litmus test of how well you’ve runspotted at NIKE headquarters. Notice how this is not answered in the questions below.

Tom Jordan protected the legacy Steve Prefontaine and NIKE Pre Classic for decades, and Tommy should be appreciated for that every day.

Jodie Smith and Joh Capriotti! (and the sports marketing team at NIKE) Know that the NIKE Pre Classic has to be the best match of the year.

RunBlogRun, 1. When does NIKE Pre management start putting the fields together for the event?

NIKE Pre Classic. The Diamond League allocates discipline for each match in the fall before the next season. Initial outreach to field consolidation begins shortly thereafter.

RunBlogRun 2: Do you work on the event all year? How much is the full-time staff?

Yes, organizing, planning and executing The Prefontaine Classic are tasks of the year. Full time TrackTown USA employee responsible for the planning and execution of the organization’s entire portfolio of events, incl The Prefontaine Classic. TrackTown USA has a staff of 29 and an additional 30 who join from April to August as seasonal staff.

RunBlogRun, 3. What is the most difficult part of the logistics of the NIKE Pre Classic? Visas? A journey? Find food for people in many countries?

NIKE Pre Classic. In accordance with the criteria set by the event nomenclature: Steve Prefontaine – and the event previous Meet Director Tom Jordan. We take our role as stewards of the legacy of the Prefontaine Classic very seriously. We honor Pre and all those who make Pre Classic the best in the world meet, relentlessly looking for ways to make it better every year.

NIKE Pre Classic. TrackTown USA i:s is centered Prefontaine Classic and all the events we support throughout the year.

RunBlogRun, 7. For many years, the NIKE Pre Classic was a litmus test for observers of how NIKE viewed running that year. Is that still a valid comment?

NIKE Pre Classic. No response. This question is best answered directly by Nike.

RunBlogRun, 8: What should fans know about the NIKE Pre Classic that most people don’t?

NIKE Pre Classic. While the Prefontaine Classic is revered as an annual Eugene tradition, it is also celebrated around the world. Since joining diamond league, that The Pre Classic has earned the season’s best score five times among more than 1,000 annual global invitational meets. (2025, 2023, 2017, 2016 & 2013).

  • Larry Eder has been involved in athletics for 52 years. Larry has experienced sports as an athlete, coach, magazine publisher, and now a journalist and blogger. His first article, about Don Bowden, America’s first 4-minute miler, was published in RW in 1983. Larry has published several magazines on athletics, from USA Track and Field to the American version of Spikes magazine. He currently leads content and marketing development for RunningNetwork, The Shoe Addicts, and RunBlogRun.
