According to Pujara, Suryavanshi has all the qualities to succeed at the highest level if he gets the right guidance and opportunities in the future. Acknowledging the teenager’s excellence in T20 cricket, the veteran-inclined said every young player should aspire to play Test cricket as it teaches discipline, patience and respect for the game.
Pujara stated that Suryavanshi will finally get opportunities with the Indian team due to his performance in IPL 2026. He added that only time will tell if the youngster will be a regular in Test cricket, but if he has the ability and temperament, he should definitely follow the red-ball format.
“Vaibhav is a player who is doing very well in T20 cricket and he will definitely get a chance in the Indian team. Whether he plays Test cricket or not, only time will tell. If he has the potential, opportunity, time and can play his game, he should definitely play Test cricket because that’s where your character, ability and everyone’s respect for Test cricket should definitely come from. Every young player has a mind.” Pujara reports quoting ANI.
The former India batsman also pointed out that modern cricket has allowed players to specialize in different formats. He cited examples of players who have excelled in white-ball cricket and said there is nothing wrong with having cricketers who fit the format. However, he maintained that Test cricket continues to be a major challenge for any aficionado.
“I agree that Test cricket is the ultimate format of the game, but that doesn’t mean white-ball specialist players don’t have that ability. If you have a white-ball specialist like Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi) and Shreyas Iyer, they should play in that format. There should be different players for different formats,” Pujara added.
