Charlie Edwards targets Jesse Rodriguez after Nqothole

Charlie Edwards sees a path to Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, but first he has to deal with Sikho Nqothole next week and force his way into the IBF title picture at 115 pounds.

Edwards (21-2, 7 KOs) faces Nqothole (21-3, 15 KOs) on May 29 at York Hall in Bethnal Green in a fight that could move him closer to another title shot. Bam’s long-term plans remain uncertain after moving between divisions, but Edwards believes a collision course could still develop if Rodriguez returns to super flyweight.

“Whether he comes back down to 115 at super flyweight limit, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Although Eddie is the king of spinning narratives, he knows how to attach a name to everybody. So, they’re also talking about staying at 115,” Edwards told Sky Sports.

“I’m going down the IBF route though. Obviously I’ve got a tough task ahead of me with Sikho coming up next week, but one I’m confident of beating anyone in the super flyweight division. I’m going down the IBF route, and the IBF is pretty tough.”

Edwards then made it clear he didn’t want another delay in his career after years of setbacks and inactivity, saying a Bam Rodriguez fight is something he intends to aggressively pursue if the opportunity arises.

“So with all that going on, once I get past Sikho, we’ll put the email in. I don’t want my career to stall any more than it has through all these years, and we’ll try to pursue that,” Edwards said.

“And if Bam Rodriguez does decide to come and go undisputed at superflyweight, then inevitably he’ll have to go through me. And that’s the way I see it.

“And it creates and makes a massive fight. Of course, my brother fought Bam. Like I’ve always said. I’ve always chosen to chase greatness, and it’s one fight at a time now. But I’m not naive to think it’s out there now, and it always will be to have my old promoter and my old buddy, Eddie Hearn, on the other side of the love.”

Edwards is coming off a 10-round victory over Salvador Juarez last September. Before that, he dropped a split decision to Andrew Cain in March 2025.
