Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia Full Match Recap

Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia shared a goalless draw at NRG Stadium on 27 June. Although Cape Verde created much more, neither team could find the back of the net.

The result lifts Cape Verde to three points in Group H. Saudi Arabia also moves to two points. Both sides now await the results of Spain and Uruguay to know their fate.

Saudi Arabia started in compact form, with Salem Al-Dawsari and Nasser Al-Dawsari supporting Firas Al-Buraikan. Mohammed Al-Owais was busy early behind a disciplined defensive block.

Cape Verde went forward with energy, generating nine shots from inside the area during the ninety minutes. However, their xG of 1.46, against Saudi Arabia’s 0.40, tells the story of a game that got away from them.

Cape Verde’s best openings came through Ryan Mendes and Jamiro Monteiro, but Al-Owais made two key saves to preserve the clean sheet. At the other end, Vozinha was just as alert with three saves.

Saudi Arabia ended up with three yellow cards after Nasser Al-Dawsari was booked in the 67th minute and Firas Al-Buraikan received his in stoppage time. They walk a disciplinary tightrope.

The Cape Verde campaign is over. Their World Cup fate depends entirely on how the final Group H matches between Spain, Uruguay and the rest of the teams competing for third place play out.

Saudi Arabia are also eliminated from automatic progression, but could still benefit from a third-place finish. Their balance of two points in three days leaves little room for optimism.
