Canelo Álvarez starts camp, wants champion opponent

The decision narrows the field immediately. At 168 and nearby divisions, that requirement indicates belt holders rather than contenders, indicating a selection with greater importance than a routine busy match.

Sharing the update through Box Azteca, Canelo said that preparations are already underway for the Riyadh event. Promoter Richard Schaefer was also in talks with Turki Alalshikh to finalize the opponent as part of the Saudi-backed card.

“Just as long as he’s a champion,” Canelo said when asked about the selection criteria.

The September date puts the fight in the same window Canelo has traditionally used for major events, although it will be another outing related to Saudi Arabia’s growing role in boxing promotion.

No opponent has been confirmed, but the champion-only stance limits the options and suggests negotiations are already focused on titleholders willing to travel.

While Christian Mbilli is now the WBC champion, his immediate availability remains uncertain following his January title win. There has been industry discussion of a possible rematch with Lester Martinez after their draw last year, which could tie up that title in the near term.

Another relevant development is the upcoming WBO super middleweight title fight between Hamzah Sheeraz and Alem Begic on May 23, which will determine a new champion in the division.

The outcome of that fight could expand the list of available titleholders for Canelo’s return in September, especially if his team prioritizes a fight against a current beltholder.

Sheeraz, in particular, has featured prominently on recent Saudi-backed cards, which could make him a viable option depending on the result.

If a decision on Canelo’s opponent is still pending, the timing of the May 23 fight could play a role in shaping the final choice.

That situation could affect the pool of champions available for Canelo’s return in September, especially if negotiations are limited to fighters who hold recognized belts and are free to move on.

With Richard Schaefer working with Turki Alalshikh to finalize the opponent, the focus is expected to remain on securing a titleholder who can headline the planned “Mexico Against the World” event in Riyadh.
