Canelo Alvarez refuses to look past his underdog opponent, IBF Super Middleweight Champion William Scull, to the Mega Fight against Terence Crawford in September. WBA, WBC and WBO champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 COs) said today that he is “is”100%”linked In for the fight against Scull (23-0, 9 cost) on May 3 at the venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Unwanted battle
It should be annoying to Canelo, because fans want to hear more about the Crawford (41-0, 31 COs) than they do to Scull. They do not judge the Cuban fighter, and look at this man on the same lines as the last opponent of Alvarez, Edgar Berlanga, who had zero for him, except a crossweight size.
Scull is not the ideal fighter to help build interest in Canelo’s match against Crawford. He needs Osleys Iglesias, Diego Pacheco, Janibek Alimkhanuly or Christian Mbilli. Even Jake Paul would prefer to be scull.
The problem with Jake is that the interest that the fight would bring in would dwarf what Canelo would do against Crawford. Bud is not popular outside the Ultra Hardcore Boxing Fan. Casuals don’t know who the 37-year-old Crawford is, and regular fans who don’t box have never heard of him.
The Canelo-Scull undercard is still being filled in. Currently, the only battle on the bottom map is the heavyweight collision between Martin Bakole and Efe Ajagba. Hopefully Turki Alalshikh can get some extra fights that motivate fans to buy the event. Canelo’s fight against Scull is not a big enough attraction to attract fans to buy the PPV event.
