The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the road map for IPL 2026 playoffs confirm a significant change in the final stages of the tournament. In a move that has sparked both excitement and debate, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the grand final on May 31, marking the second year in a row that the world’s biggest cricket stadium has been chosen for the summit clash.
The decision came as a surprise to many as Bengaluru was expected to host the final Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the historic title last season. However, due to complex logistical challenges and strict local requirements, the BCCI opted for a multi-city playoff format involving three different venues.
BCCI announces IPL 2026 playoff schedule and venues
In a departure from the traditional two-venue playoff structure, the 2026 edition will see the action spread over Dharamshala, New Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. This special arrangement ensures that high-stakes matches are spread across some of India’s most modern cricket infrastructure.
- Selection 1: The top two teams will compete for a direct spot in the finals on May 26 at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.
- Eliminator & Qualifier 2: The focus then shifts to the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The third- and fourth-placed teams will face each other in the Eliminator on May 27, followed by Qualifier 2 on the 29th.
- Grand Finale: The tournament will reach its crescendo on May 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which will host the fourth IPL final (2022, 2023, 2025 and now 2026).
The inclusion of the new Chandigarh and Dharamshala underlines the BCCI’s intention to bring marquee cricket to different regions, although the move to hold the final in Ahmedabad reinforces the venue’s status as the board’s prime destination for high-capacity events.
Why is Ahmedabad replacing Bengaluru as the host of the final?
transfer from M. Chinnaswamy Stadium It disappointed the home fans in Bengaluru. By tradition, the home ground of the defending champions often hosts the following year’s final, the BCCI said “operational and logistical considerations” it went beyond their established protocols.
Deep-seated concerns about crowd control probably influenced this turn. The venue has come under intense scrutiny following the tragic events at last year’s Victory Parade, in which 11 people were killed during the celebrations. Although the stadium has been cleared to host league matches, the massive scale of the IPL final coupled with the specific requirements of the local authorities has led the BCCI to consider Ahmedabad a safer and more suitable option.
Boasting a capacity of over 110,000, the Narendra Modi Stadium offers a controlled environment with a global focus. However, the decision was not without its critics. Cricket fans have voiced their concerns over the perceived monopoly of the venue, claiming that iconic grounds like the Eden Gardens in Kolkata or the Wankhede in Mumbai have been overlooked in favor of Gujarat’s flagship. Regardless of the controversy, the stage is now set for a cinematic conclusion to the 2026 season.
